Stephen McDonald
#967 ( #34 C)
OVR:73 (+5)
:star::star::star:
Great depth sign. Won't need to make an immediate impact which will give him time to add some weight to his 6'2 273 frame.

Adam Woods
#884 ( #50 G)
OVR:74 (+6)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

Woods was a nice find from Tennessee. He wanted to commit early to focus on his final high school season. Will need to work on his run blocking during his redshirt year but will likely move in to a starting role as a redshirt freshman.

Michael Landry
#242 ( #8 SS)
OVR:76 (+2)
:star::star::star::star:
Georgia native who looks to enroll during the spring semester to get a leg up. More than likely will redshirt. Not stellar at any one thing but also isn't deficient and any skill either.

Quinn Johnson
#179 ( #24 HB)
OVR:73 (+2)
:star::star::star::star:
Johnson is a nice local kid who decided to stay in state and go to his father's alma mater. No flashy attributes but no holes either. Will redshirt and then probably find the field due to the upperclassman having injury problems.

Bo Golden
#198 ( #10 TE)
OVR:73 (-1)
:star::star::star::star:
Golden doesn't have the size most teams would like in a TE (6'1 228) but has a decent set of hands on him. He won't be asked to stretch the field with his 75 speed but will be a reliable target in the middle of the field.

Kyle Newton
#708 ( #56 OLB)
OVR:74 (+5)
:star::star::star:
Newton is a nice Florida find. Has decent coverage skills but will need to add some bulk to his 6'0 195lb frame to play in the ACC.

Andrew McDonald
#283 ( #46 ATH)
OVR:67 (-1)
:star::star::star::star:
McDonald is a big athlete who is going to play football and basketball at North Carolina. His primary focus will be football. His 6'5 230lb frame will likely be a TE/WR or fullback.

Al Doty
#475 ( #21 MLB)
OVR:72 (+3)
:star::star::star:
Doty will be a hole plugger in the Tar Heel defence. What he lacks in coverage ability he makes up for in tackling ability.

Joey Cotton
#434 ( #26 OLB)
OVR:74 (+2)
:star::star::star:
Cotton will be behind a solid group but has the athleticism to make an impact on special teams after his redshirt year. Needs to put some time in the weightroom to add some size at only 6'1 184, but had nice speed (80) and acceleration (94) for an OLB. First signee from Oklahoma in quite some time for the Tar Heels.

Joseph Townsend
#116 ( #27 ATH)
OVR:76 (+4)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

Third highest rated recruit out of North Carolina. At 6'0 220 Townsend has the frame of a RB and the skill set to go will. Also has amazing coverage skills and tackling ability. The rest of the recruiting class will decide where he plays. More than likely will be a DB after his redshirt year.

Tom McGill
#29 ( #11 ATH)
OVR:77 (+2)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

Not sure where Illinois product McGill will play either. Has a decent arm (83/82) and decent speed (84) for a QB but the position is pretty deep right now. Doesn't have the size or speed to play WR.

James Holt
#234 ( #18 MLB)
OVR:73
:star::star::star::star:
Holt keeps the pipeline to Florida alive and strong. MLB is a large position of need right now with 2 seniors leaving after this season and only 1 redshirt freshman behind them for depth. Holt will be fighting for a starting spot come fall. Will hopefully sign a JUCO MLB for a back up to enable Holt to redshirt and not burn a year being a backup.

Martin Floyd
#949 ( #55 T)
OVR:70 (+4)
:star::star::star:
In state kid who shows some promise. Has a great frame to work with at 6'4 303 and a quick first step (95 acc). Will add some good depth to the OL and possibly push for playing time around his sophomore or junior year.

Joel Marshall
#1665 ( #13 FB)
OVR:67 (-5)
:star::star:
Marshall is a bruiser of a blocker and uses his size (6'0 268) to his advantage. A knee injury during his senior year dampered his recruiting rankings but he will bounce back once he gets on campus.

Dan Williams
#772 ( #43 T)
OVR:66 (-3)
:star::star::star:
Adds depth to the OL. Decent frame (6'5 300) to work with. Mainly signed to ensure the Georgia pipeline and hopefully be able to sign his 2 younger brothers in the future.

Shannon Harris
#2051 ( #19 P)
OVR:76 (+6)
:star::star:
gem.png

He's a punter.

Landon Black
#132 ( #9 TE)
OVR:66 (-4)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

Has good receiving skills for a TE but lacks the critical blocking skills to find the field early in his career. Will need to add some size to his 6'5 234 lb frame in order to be a more dependable blocker.

Matthew Coles
#682 ( #49 DT)
OVR:67 (-1)
:star::star::star:
Oklahoma product who will fill in on the depth chart but not very likely he will ever see a starting spot.

Mike Weber
#2339 ( #35 FB)
OVR:68 (-1)
:star:
SOJucoIcon.png

Weber may get sent back to Junior College after signing day.

Bret Morgan
#1639 ( #139 DE)
OVR:79 (+4)
:star::star:
JRJucoIcon.png

Good looking Alabama product who tried to get in to North Carolina the past 2 years but grades wouldn't allow it. Will redshirt to get academics under control and then be a key backup.

Brady Johnson
#155 ( #37 ATH)
OVR:68 (-3)
:star::star::star::star:
Could be a nice addition to the backfield. He he goes that route he may need to sit for a bit. Could also play WR and find the field much earlier.

Antoine Boyd
#1109 ( #69 TE)
OVR:67 (+2)
:star::star::star:
Not overly fast for a receiving TE and doesn't have the size and blocking skills for a blocking TE. Could be moved to FB.

2015 Recruiting

Heath Bush
#641 ( #39 G)
OVR:78 (+8)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

Bush is a nice find out of Virginia. Got injured during his junior which hurt his recruiting process but helped out the Tar Heels. Will redshirt and then step in as a starter. Huge position of need, nice to get out of the way early in the recruiting process.

Derek Bryant
#583 ( #42 DT)
OVR:68 (+2)
:star::star::star:
Bryant is a hometown kid who signed with his fathers alma mater. Will redshirt and then play as a key reserve. DT is a another position of need that may get filled with a bunch of average kids and hoping 1 or 2 really step up during spring ball.

Kevin Sharp
#46 ( #17 ATH)
OVR:75
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

Good looking athlete from Georgia who could play WR or DB. Has decent speed for his size at 6-3 210 and 90 spd. More than likely a WR.

Zac Walker
#856 ( #27 FS)
OVR:74 (+6)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

Huge need sign with Walker. DB is getting thin and this class will look to reload with depth. Will redshirt and then be a key backup.

John Bowser
#135 ( #2 MLB)
OVR:74 (-1)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

The #2 MLB in the country has decided on the Tar Heels. Great sideline to sideline speed. Will redshirt and then play special teams. May have to serve some time as a backup before there is a starting spot available.

Greg Cox
#224 ( #44 WR)
OVR:76 (+6)
:star::star::star::star:
gem.png

Not alot of speed with Cox but he has good hands and runs good routes. Will redshirt and then fight for playing time in the slot.

Roshawn Ingram
#873 ( #50 T)
OVR:68 (+1)
:star::star::star:
Ingram is a big farm kid (6'8 313) from South Dakota. Not alot of competition for a fellow like this so scouting reports are hard to judge. Lots of upside with this kid.

Kevin Williams
#1347 ( #40 SS)
OVR:72 (+8)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

Big position of need after graduating to 90+ seniors this season. Has linebacker size (6'5 213) which should help playing SS#2 closer to the line.

David Gaston
#334 ( #17 G)
OVR:73 (+1)
:star::star::star:
Another signee at a big position of need for the future. OL should be set for a few years now and recruiting efforts can go other places for the next couple seasons. Gaston continues the pipeline from Georgia for the middle of the road prospects. Overlooked by most schools due to his height (6'0) but will be a nice addition to the OL in the future.

Bubba Hinds
#1314 ( #90 CB)
OVR:67 (+4)
:star::star::star:
Another overlooked recruit from Texas. Hinds will be a solid depth guy who hopefully develops in to a rotation guy after a couple of years.

John Kerr
#829 ( #50 CB)
OVR:67 (+1)
:star::star::star:
Small cover corner out of Georgia. Not alot of speed. Will primarily be on special teams and maybe find himself in to the dime package at some point.

Mark Griffin
#587 ( #109 WR)
OVR:72 (+6)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

Big bodied WR from Texas. Not great top end speed but will get to where he needs to be and has hands of glue.

Anthony Smith
#1342 ( #192 WR)
OVR:68 (+2)
:star::star::star:
SOJucoIcon.png

Smith is long, lanky and can run. At 6'7 he should tower over corners and has the top end speed (94) to run past them. Needs to work on his first step (70 acc) during his red shirt year. If he gets a little quicker of the ball he could be really dangerous.

Neal Williams
#1128 ( #86 DT)
OVR:79 (+5)
:star::star::star:
SOJucoIcon.png

Williams is the 3rd kid to to snag out of Texas so far this year. Big framed kid with room to grow (6'6 278). Will redshirt to get acclimated to D1 football and then likely step in as a starter. Could possibly play as a back up next year depending on what else is signed for DT this year.

Trey Benjamin
#738 ( #134 WR)
OVR:68 (+3)
:star::star::star:
Another big WR from Texas with speed. Should be full at WR for a couple years with Benjamin being #4 of the year. 2 possession guys and two speedsters.

Jason Barclay
#766 ( #55 DT)
OVR:70 (+2)
:star::star::star:
Barclay is the 3rd DT to sign this year. DT was a high priority with 3 seniors leaving. Tall lanky kid (6'5 267) with great ability to shed blocks. Will redshirt and then fight for a spot in the rotation.

TJ Drew
#752 ( #74 DE)
OVR:71 (+3)
:star::star::star:
Undersized (6'1 223) from Utah. Will need to put in some time in the weightroom in order to see the field. "High motor kid" with a great work ethic. DE wasn't a position of need but depth always helps.

Derek Butler
#544 ( #50 DE)
OVR:71 (+2)
:star::star::star:
Butler is an ok sized DE (6'3 240) with no super strengths and no super weaknesses. Not a position of need but will make next seasons recruiting a little easier without having to get a stud DE.

First time that I have filled all of my recruiting spots early. Didn't plan on the last 3 signing this week and was hoping to battle Virginia for FS Robert Mueller.
Not a star studded class. 15 3 star and only 3 4star recruits.
0 immediate impact players that I am super excited about. Pretty much a depth building class.

2016 Recruiting

Pat Tremblay
#178 ( #9 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+4)
Tremblay is a punishing run blocker from Texas that will fit in perfectly with the Tar Heels run first offence. May have a tough time cracking the starting lineup for a bit as last season's recruiting brought in 2 guards. Has the size to develop in to a monster (6'6 317). Also considered Miami.

Ron Miller
#19 ( #7 ATH)
:star::star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:78 (+2)
Miller is the first 5 star signee for the Tar Heels in quite some time. Will likely move to RB during his redshirt year and then play backup to Fuqa for a year before taking over. Has decent speed (91/86). Miller will be a more between the tackles bruiser type running back that the Tar Heels are more used to. Also had an offer from Toledo.

Justin Nelson
#65 ( #12 WR)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:77 (+4)
Not a position of need at all with 12 Wr's returning next year but he was too solid of a recruit to pass up. Doesn't have blazing speed or towering height but is a good all-around WR. Will obviously redshirt and then fight for playing time on special teams.

John Stovall
#1151 ( #26 SS)
:star::star::star:
JRJucoIcon.png

OVR:81 (+2)
Stovall will jump in right away and contribute as a back up SS. Big framed kid (6'4 196) who plays well close to the LOS which will work great for SS #2.

Nate Henderson
#466 ( #29 CB)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+5)
Depth signing for the CB position. Will be a career backup. Also had an offer from the hometown Hoosiers but decided winning was more important than playing time. True team player.

Anthony Smith
#264 ( #6 FS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+2)
Great run support FS. Could possibly move to LB with FS being pretty log jammed and Smith doesn't have the greatest cover skills for a FS.

Eugene Cooke
#181 ( #3 FS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:73 (-2)
Quincy, FL product will probably never see a down at FS. Lacks coverage skills (63/61/86) to make an impact as a DB. Will likely move to LB and be a force. Will have great speed (94/89) and tackling ability (92) for a LB.

Andre Johnson
#42 ( #12 ATH)
:star::star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:75
Johnson is the next "short" QB the Tar Heels are banking on leading the team. At 5'10 180 Johnson doesn't have the typical size most teams would like in a QB, but we aren't worried about building NFL QB's, we are about winning games and Johnson will help do that. Will have great speed (89/85) for a QB and throws a decent ball as well (80/85). Will redshirt and then most likely play back up for a year before stepping on the field.

Luke Wood
#686 ( #29 SS)
:star::star::star:
OVR:71 (+2)
Wood adds much needed depth the the defensive backfield. Nothing flashy, hard nosed blue collar kid from Minnesota. Will redshirt and then be a career backup.

Tim Hawk
#621 ( #55 DE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:72 (+3)
Decent local product who will end up being a key reserve after his redshirt year. Will likely be a backup until his senior year.

Dennis Williams
#257 ( #6 FS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+3)
Another candidate to get moved to LB due to lack of coverage skills and the current depth at FS already on the team. Also had offers from USC, UCLA, New Mexico, and Nebraska.

Offense
The Tar Heels bring back pretty much everything on offense this season. Headlining the returners is 2 time Heisman winning HB Adrian Fuqua. Fuqua is on a mission to be the first 3 timer. In the offseason Fuqua has hit the weight room hard, "bulking up" his 5'8 frame to 183 lbs to go along with his blazing speed (99/99).
-Joel Pennington returns for his senior season at QB after a season ending collarbone injury that prevented him from entering the draft. If 99 OVR Pennington goes down again, Tom McGill will step in again and bring a little more athleticism.
-The WR position will be full of speed this coming season. All but 1 will have 95+ speed.
-The OL will be better as a whole from last year but not have the top end talent.
Defence
The D will have a new look this year with all world DE Jalen Dalton and OLB Martin Jackson gone to the draft. Kyle Newton has moved from OLB to DE to bring a little more fire power to the DL. He will line up next to returning All-American DT Neal Williams. TJ Drew and Derek Butler will rotate at the other DE position.
-Joey Cotton finally gets his turn to play OLB with Newton moving to DE and Jackson going pro. Cotton and blue chip recruit Tony Slaughter will man the OLB positions with Al Doty returning from a season ending injury at MLB. Doty was a Bednarik and LB award winner during his sophomore season and looks to return to that form.
-The Defensive backfield returns All-American Joseph Townsend at lock down corner with Michael Landry returning for his senior year after deciding the NFL could wait one more year.
-Jason Harris will man the kicking duties (99/99) with Jack Jones taking over punting this season (96/94).

Tony Jordan
#403 ( #46 ATH)
:star::star::star:
OVR:76
SOJucoIcon.png

Tony will join the Tar Heels 1 year later than anticipated. Transcript issues in high school prevented him from joining on time. Tony will be join the squad in the spring and possibly see playing time right away at RB due to his speed (93/93). If the other RB's progress well he may take a redshirt year.

John Taylor
#1001 ( #8 P)
:star::star::star:
OVR:84 (+5)
Taylor looks like your typical chess club member from the waist up but once you see his legs, you know he can kick the ball. Taylor will be primarily a kick off specialist with his 94 kick power but will need to work on his 74 accuracy before seeing FG duties.

Rashad Burnett
#137 ( #5 T)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+2)
top150.png

The signing of Burnett is a huge sigh of relief this recruiting season as Tackle was a giant position of need for the future. The 6'4 268 lb New Hampshire recruit will need to add some size to his frame to be able to compete in the ACC compared to the competition he is used to in the NE.

Terrell Day
#74 ( #24 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+5)
top150.png

Day has a cannon for an arm but can also run crisp routes and has decent coverage skills as well. Doesn't have the top end speed needed for the ACC for WR or CB but Day will be enrolling early in order to participate in spring ball and find what position he fits best in to.

Adam Gray
#433 ( #29 T)
:star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+5)
Louisiana boy who came with the promise that he will have a chance to fight for a starting spot as a redshirt freshman. Battle will be between him and fellow recruit Burnett. Gray is a skilled pass blocker with very good feet. Will need to improve his mean streak a little more. Chose North Carolina over a late offer from hometown LSU.

Josh Crum
#184 ( #19 DE)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+4)
Stout product from Albany, New York who will play RE or possibly move to DT if needed. Should have a starting spot after redshirting. No other schools pursued Crum although he did show interest in Texas.

Kareem Rush
#245 ( #21 DE)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+3)
His name says it all, when the coaches went to visit this kid their jaws dropped. He just looks like a pass rushing freak at 6'6 240. Has the speed and athleticism to drop in to coverage if needed. Also drew interest from Miami and Akron.

Daryl Johnson
#230 ( #11 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+2)
Tar Heels plucked another one out of Texas. Johnson has a great first step and is a very skilled in pass protection. Could possibly move to center with the abundance of OL signed in this class.

Jimmy Louis
#109 ( #8 DE)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+3)
top150.png

Louis is the 7th lineman to sign with the Tar Heels so far this season, with the possibility of 2 more to come. Crum was the run stopper, Rush was the pass rusher, and Louis is a combination of both.

Josh Huff
#94 ( #4 T)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+1)
top150.png

The #4 OT in the country chose North Carolina over offers from Miami, ULM, Florida State, and West Virginia. Adds to one of the deepest OL recruiting classes in Tar Heel history. Coaching staff is looking forward to the battles in practice for playing time.

Shannon Day
#2319 ( #38 FB)
:star:
OVR:65 (+5)
Day is an in state kid with a strong work ethic. Played HB in high school but knows for him to find the field in power 5 conference he would need to be a FB. Day will redshirt and learn what he can from bruiser Joel Marshall to prepare him for a starting spot as a redshirt freshman. Day also had offers from UConn and NC State and drew heavy interest from Wake Forrest but never got the offer he was looking for.

Ryan Reid
#310 ( #19 DT)
:star::star::star:
OVR:73 (+2)
The food service industry is going to have their hands full this coming fall with Reid being the 8th lineman to sign. Will at valuable depth to the DL for years to come. North Carolina was his only offer with Army showing interest late.

The Tar Heels will lose a good group this season. They all stuck together last year to come back and make a title run. After tough losses to Cincinnati and Notre Dame in the regular season they bounced back to beat Texas to make it in to the ACC title game where they got revenge on Cincinnati. The big performance in the ACC title game vaulted them one step closer to their goal of a National Title only to fall flat on their face.

For the 4th year in a row the offence was on Adrian Fuqua's back and he did't disappoint. Fuqua rushed for 2226 yards and 41 TD's, caught 43 passes for 335 yards and TD's, and returned kick/punts for TD's. 4 year starter Joel Pennington will be off to the NFL draft. His streaky career has NFL scouts intrigued to what he could do in the right offence and have him pegged as a late first round pick. Next year will finally be Tom McGill's chance to lead the team. McGill has been waiting patiently in the wings of Pennington for 4 years. McGill will bring a little more athleticism to the QB position and will take some of the carries that used to go to the HB.
Receiving was led by Matt Vincent with 66 receptions for 1236 yards and 10 TD's. The speed of the WR group will be missed when Vincent(98), Carrington(95), and Jones(95) all graduate this year. There is a large group of underclassman chomping at the bit to get more playing time with these 3 gone.

The defence will have a new look next season. Kyle Newton flourished in his more from OLB to DE this season, racking up 14 sacks and single handedly winning the ACC title game with his pressure on Dylan Johnson. Newton is expected to go undrafted as a DE but will get multiple looks as a UFA hybrid DE/OLB. MLB Al Doty is off to the NFL after holding down the position for 4 years. Doty was a Bednarik and LB of the Year award winner as a sophomore before an injury ended his Junior season. He bounced back well this season with a team leading 85 tackles, 1 sack, 4 INT, and 3 FF. Doty is projected as a late round draft pick due to injury concerns. Next years battle between James Holt and John Bowser will be a fun one to watch in spring ball. The top 2 corners are also leaving this season. Joseph Townsend couldn't turn down the opportunity to to go early in the draft and is leaving a year early. Townsend was a 3 year starter and lockdown corner. His INT numbers aren't the greatest due to the fact that most teams decided not to throw his way. Emmanuel Tate never expected to be in a starting role during his career at UNC but worked his way up the depth chart and was a solid contributor this season. Next season will be an influx of youth at DB. SS Michael Landry is projected as an early 2nd round or late first round draft pick. His 6'0 215 size has many scouts intrigued. Landry was a 2 time All-American for the Tar Heels. Unsung hero John Stovall transferred in as a Junior and stepped in right away as SS#2. He isn't projected to get drafted but has fielded many calls about possibly moving to OLB in the NFL with his 6'4 frame and ability to play close to the LOS.

The strength of the defence next season will be the interior line with 2 returning All-Americans at DT in Neil Williams and Matthew Coles. On Offence the interior OL will be the strength but the key positions of QB and HB will be a concern with the fresh new faces.

Darryl Armstrong
#1412 ( #68 TE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:76
JRJucoIcon.png

Armstrong will fill the void at TE#2 next season as a stop gap. Will hopefully find a young TE or 2 yet this season to groom for the future.

Omarr Jackson
#107 ( #21 WR)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+5)
top150.png

Jackson has the coaching staff pretty excited with his commitment. For once WR was a position of need for the future with 8 of the 9 WR's on roster being juniors or seniors. Jackson has great speed (94/93) and a good set of hands. Jackson chose UNC over and offer from NC State but also had interest in Virginia and Wake but they showed him no love. Jackson will redshirt and then look to be a key contributor after that.

E.J. Reese
#101 ( #29 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+5)
top150.png

Reese's commitment give the coaching staff plenty of options for the future. He can play QB (92 THP, 78 THA), WR (80 CTH, 85 RR), and DB (87 man, 85 zone, 75 press). With his speed (90/87) all will but QB will be an option. More than likely will be WR with the coaching staffs lack of recruiting that past couple seasons.

James Washington
#429 ( #23 CB)
:star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+8)
gem.png

Washington was a nice find from New Mexico. Has great speed (91/93) and great cover skills (82/85/86). Will redshirt and contribute right after. Washington signed with UNC even though Texas was his first choice. When the longhorns overlooked his size (163 lbs) he choose the Tar Heels.

Adrian Herron
#14 ( #6 ATH)
:star::star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+1)
top150.png

With the signing of Herron, there will be plenty of position changes coming next spring. Look for 1 or 2 of the current QB's to be moved to WR and Herron to be groomed as the next Heisman candidate. Herron played alot of RB in high school but also has an arm (82/78). His arm isn't anything flashy but with his wheels (93/88) he will be dangerous. Also had offers from Ohio, Clemson, and Pitt. His decision came down to the school that could get him on TV the most and to the NFL.

Scott Bennett
#59 ( #8 HB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+4)
top150.png

Next short and fast RB of the future for UNC. Only 5'9 but has great speed (94/94). Will redshirt to hopefully build some size to his frame.

Derrick Buckley

Charles Simmons

Punishing run blocker from Texas with a quick first step. Has the frame to develop in to a monster at 6'5 277. Once he hits the college weightroom he could hit 300+ easily. Will redshirt and fight for playing time after that.

Donta Beverly
#205 ( #5 CB)
OVR:76 (+3)
:star::star::star::star:
Beverly is a good sized CB from Georgia with a nice set of coverage skills coming from High School. Will need to improve his tackling a little more if he wants to see the field early in nickel and dime formations. He will be deep on the depth chart by the time he redshirts but has a good group of guys ahead of him to show him the ropes.

2021 Preview

The 2021 Tar Heels will have extreme riches in depth at some positions and be quite slim at the others. The coaching staff is trying to stay more balanced in recruiting in the future.

Quarterback- Will be led for the 2nd year in a row by John Stegall. Not a flashy passer or runner but will get the job done. Working on controlling the turnovers this season. If for some reason Stegall would go down, the coaching staff will look past 2nd stringer and go right to the "kid" Slade Sims. Sims is a punishing runner with a cannon for an arm. He still has some work to do on his accuracy which he will hopefully be able to work on during garbage time.

Running Back- Last season starter Ron Miller and backup Tony Jordan went down in the same game, Miller for the season and Jordan for 4 weeks. During that time sophomore Brandon Moore took over and never let go of the starting spot. Miller and Moore will look to spread the carries in the first couple weeks and the coaching staff will go with the hot hand. Miller is a bruiser with speed while Moore has blazing speed.

Wide Receiver- Stegall will have an entire new group to work with this season. Justin Nelson will be the #1 go to guy while converted QB Terrell Day will hold down the more possession spot of #2. The coaching staff is excited about the off season performance of freshman Omarr Jackson in the slot. The home town kid has worked on improving his hands to go along with his 95/95 speed and should be a major threat when defences creep up to stop the run.

Tight End- Eugene Jackson will be back as a year 2 starter and primarily be used as a blocker. He has great hands will also be utilized in short yardage situations.

Tackle- OT will be young with Josh Huff (played TE #2 last season) and returning starter Rashad Burnett. Both were Freshman All-Americans last season. If either one goes down, OT is light on depth with only 1 backup.

Guard- When Pat Tremblay decided to return for his senior year the coaching staff had a sigh of relief. Tremblay (99 OVR) and redshirt junior Justin Powell (92 OVR) will be road graders in the middle.

Center- During spring ball the coaches moved Scott Jones to center to provide some competition but Adam Gray ramped up his training even more and has so far kept his spot.

Defensive End- Another position of brand new faces. Jimmy Louis will man the left side with Tim Hawk on the right. Kareem Rush and Phillip Gibson will rotate in as needed.

Defensive Tackle- Josh Crum saw the writing on the wall last year with his position on the depth chart. Seeing this he packed on the weight and moved to DT. Instead of being DE #4 he is DT #1. He will use his pass rushing skills to be a force in the middle.

Linebacker- The leader of the defence will be 4 year starter Tony Slaughter. Slaughter's return to school was quite the surprise to the coaching staff. He has struggled in school and has all of the physical tools to play in the NFL. He will be moved around and even play a little safety in some formations.
Dennis Williams finally gets his shot at MLB. The former FS may get substituted out during short yardage situations but leaves zero concerns for coverage issues.

Defensive Backs- The DB's are nothing flashy but have plenty of speed. CB is full of young talent all vying for playing time. FS will be double teamed by Eugene Cook and EJ Reese. Cook is a speedster who hits like a house and Reese is more of a coverage guy who will dive and ankles.

Projected Starting Lineup
QB-Stegall
HB-Moore/Miller
FB-Burns
WR-Nelson,Day, Jackson, Bennett
TE-Jackson, Armstrong
LT-Huff
RT-Burnett
LG-Powell
RG-Tremblay
C-Gray
RE-Hawk
LE-Louis
DT-Crum, Williams
ROLB-Slaughter
LOLB-Williams
MLB-Williams
CB-Edwards, Henderson, Bowie
FS-Cooke/Reese
SS-Wood
K/P-Taylor

With only 7 seniors on roster and 6 open roster spots the team will have to really focus on "their guys". Major focus will go to the OL and LB's.

Leigh Briggs
#98 ( #5 MLB)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:75 (-1)
MLB was't a direct position of need but it would be hard to pass up a top 150 recruit. Briggs doesn't have big bruising size (6'0 222) or blazing speed(83/86) but is a good overall product. By the time he sees the field he should be a very respectable MLB. Also had offers from Syracuse, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, and Troy.

Ed Miller
#148 ( #6 OLB)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:76
OLB was a huge position of need this recruiting period. The hometown kid shows great tacking ability but will need to work on his coverage skills to be an every down OLB. Will likely start as a redshirt freshman. Was also interested in Wake Forest, even went on a visit but decided on UNC after the Tar Heels pulled off the upset at Wake.

Cedric Fields
#1 ( #1 ATH)
:star::star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:79 (-3)
The #1 recruit in the country has chosen to take his talents to Chapel Hill for the 2022 season. The latest scouting reports aren't as high as the initial ones but he is still regarded as one of the top prospects in the country. The 6'4 225 lb Florida native will more than likely play QB in college. He doesn't quite have the speed (81/82) that the Tar Heel program is used to having but his arm will make up for it. Fields also played some time at linebacker and safety in high school. He was also looking at Clemson, Wake Forest, Texas, and Cincinnati but nobody showed and interest other than UNC. The signing of Fields will hopefully start the landslide of more early commits.

Kyle Houston
#165 ( #9 OLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:73 (-2)
Houston comes in as the 2nd OLB signee of the season and hopefully one more will be added. Houston doesn't have the speed necessary to play OLB at a high level so look for him to be moved to DE, with his 6'4 frame he should be able to grow into a nice pass rushing DE. Houston also had offers from Florida State and Penn State.

Gabe Simon
#1014 ( #34 SS)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+3)
Simon was signed for depth and to keep the pipeline to Pennsylvania alive. Could possibly move down and be an OLB.

Robert Martin
#151 ( #26 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+3)
Coaching staff reached in to California to snag 4 star Martin. He played QB and WR in high school but projects more as a slot WR in college as he doesn't quite have the arm for a Power 5 Conference. Also had offers from Oklahoma and Penn State.

Omar Jones
#264 ( #14 TE)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+2)
The signing of Florida native Omar Jones has the coaching staff jumping for joy. With his size (6'7 265) and speed (80/84), they could be looking at the next coming of Gronk but without the injury bug. Also received offers from Florida, Miami, and Auburn.

Greg Alvarez
#401 ( #49 ATH)
:star::star::star:
OVR:73 (+5)
Texas kid who just recently started playing football and hasn't quite found his true position yet. Will more than likely play SS for the Tar Heels.

Leroy Ellison

ROLB-Tony Slaughter-99 OVR
Beast from day 1 on campus. Coaches had a hard time redshirting him but during his redshirt he was voted as scout team player of the year. Started all 4 years at ROLB. Didn't have flashy stats but made the big play when it was needed. Top 5 draft pick

WR-Justin Nelson-98 OVR
1st round Draft pick.

TE-Eugene Jackson-97 OVR
Really stepped up his game once he was put in the starting role. Senior year he was the go to target in the redzone. 1st Round Draft pick.

CB-Nate Henderson-92 OVR
Kid really worked his tale off every day. Progressed from an unwanted 3 star recruit to more than likely getting drafted to play on Sundays. 2 year starter at corner while being a key contributor to special teams as a sophomore. 2nd round Draft pick.

Tar Heel Preseason Outlook

The battle to watch in spring ball was at the QB position. 5th year senior Andre Johnson has patiently waited his shot to lead the team with Slade Sims putting on the pressure. After spring it was a coin flip to who would start but Head Coach Todd Oye gave the nod to the upperclassman. Johnson has great speed (93/89) and a nice arm (84/99). Johnson is a true leader and team player. If Sims ends up coming in at QB, Johnson will move to WR. Sims is an electrifying QB who seems to have a knack for big plays. His blazing speed (96/97) and cannon for an arm (92/83) will make him a real problem for defences. Sims has the size advantage (6'1 to Johnson at 5'10) but lacks true leadership at this point. The coaching staff has already said no matter what, there will be a few packages just for Sims to show off his athleticism.

Running back- Another position full of talent. Former Juco Tony Jordan is the highest rated player in the stable but hasn't impressed coaches yet, he will more than likely just return kicks. Brandon Moore will get the start. He came on the season during his sophomore year as the teams #3 and ended up a Heisman candidate and would have again last season if he wasn't sidelined by an injury for 4 weeks. Backing up Moore will be Scott Bennet who will be looking to get his feet wet in anticipation of a starting role next season.

Wide Receiver- Junior and former QB Terrell Day will lead the wide outs this season. Doesn't have blistering speed but has hands of glue for short to intermediate routes. The playmaker at WR will once again be sophomore Omarr Jackson. Jackson will play out of the slot hoping to get mismatches on slower safeties. Overall the WR group has a nice mix of solid pass catchers and speed. How they are used will be determined by the starting QB.

Tight End-Very rarely do you have a Mackey Award Winner leave for the NFL and be better at the position the following season. 6'7 Darryl Armstrong has big shoes to fill but the coaches are confident he can do that and more. Armstrong is more of a natural pass catcher than Jackson was and has more speed. He lacks a little in the run blocking game but he will more than likely be subbed out for those plays.

Offensive Line- With only 1 senior leaving from last years OL, this years group knows how to work together. Darryl Johnson will step in to fill the shoes of 1st round draft pick and CFB Hall of Famer Pat Tremblay at guard. Returning for their 3rd year as starters are Justin Powell (Sr, 97 OVR), LT Rashad Burnett (Jr 90 OVR), RT Josh Huff (Jr 89 OVR), and Center Adam Gray (Jr 95 OVR). Senior Scott Jones (93 OVR) will be the swing man filling in where needed.

D-Line- Jimmy Louis returns after an award winning performance last season at DE. He will be joined by the rotation of Tim Hawk and Kareem Rush on the other side. At DT, Junior Josh Crum is looking like a first round draft pick more and more every day. He should dominate the inside trenches with his size and speed.

OLB- Offences should be happier this season with HOF and 1st round draft pick Tony Slaughter no longer in the lineup. His replacements are nothing flashy but Jon Williams will move over from the left to the right side this season and former Juco Henry Hollis will man the left side. MLB will be the strong part of the corps led by tackling machine Dennis Williams. Williams move down from FS and has flourished since the move. Last season he recorded 94 tackles and will likely break the 100 mark this year. Look for Junior Rory Joyce to mix in the rotation at OLB at times.

CB- Senior Will Edwards decided to come back for his senior year without even testing the NFL draft. His speed (99/94) and coverage skills (99/99/98) should enable him to lock down any WR in the conference. Junior Pat Bowie and sophomore Tyler Edwards will rotate between the other starting CB and the nickel position.

Safety- Eugene Cooke and EJ Reese will split time at FS. Cooke the big hitter and Reese the ball hawker. At SS Luke Wood is back for his 3rd and final year as a starter.

The Tar Heels once again are looking to challenge for the ACC title but have a stronger schedule this year with crossover games with Clemson and Wake Forest, add in division rivals Texas and Virginia and it is one of the tougher schedules in the nation.

Projected Starters
QB-Johnson (Sr 99 OVR)/ Sims (So 89 OVR)
RB-Moore (Sr 90 OVR)
FB-Burns (Jr 84 OVR)
WR-Day (Jr 92 OVR)-Jackson (So 88 OVR)-Bennett (Sr 85 OVR)

Recruiting Preview
With the last two recruiting classes coming in with small numbers, the coaching staff is going to really get after it this season. Coach Oye has done well getting great depth at the specialty positions but has been slacking in the "meat and potatoes" parts. Look for the Tar Heels to go for quantity over quality this season trying to build some depth to replace the star studded Junior class in 2 seasons. All of the seniors leaving after this season have quality guys behind them ready to step up but if any of the top juniors leave the team could be in trouble next season.

2022 Recruiting
images

Tracy Wood
#169 ( #7 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:80 (+5)
The 2022 class got off to a nice start with the signing of Wood. The PA native will have room to grow into his 6'5 271 frame. Was vastly overlooked by regional schools. May need to contribute as a true freshman due to the coaching staffs lack of OL recruiting the past couple of seasons. If he redshirts he will step in and likely be a 4 year starter. If his redshirt is pulled he will be a back up and more than likely start the following 3 years.

Darrell Temple
#111 ( #27 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:77 (+5)
Temple will come in and play QB for the Tar Heels. Doesn't have the speed of previous QB's on roster, but had the size 6'3 218 to be a true duel threat. Will likely be a back up until his senior year. Will likely be sprinkled in as WR #4 or #5 after his redshirt year.

Andre Garrett
#966 ( #66 CB)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

OVR:78 (+11)
Garrett is a true steal out of Texas. He had his heart set on playing for the home state Longhorns but they showed him no love. Luckily for the Tar Heels, they showed him much love on his recruiting visit vs rival NC State. Garrett has great speed (95/89) and unbelievable coverage skills for a 3 star recruit (82/85/86).

Matt Banks
#129 ( #14 DE)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:78 (+3)
Banks comes from the under recruited state of Pennsylvania. He doesn't have the height of a blue chip recruit but is a hard worker that looks to improve. Banks will continue the tradition of great pass rushers at UNC.

Ricky Johnson
#55 ( #4 OLB)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:80 (+2)
Johnson is possibly one of the more underrated 4 star recruits in the nation. He has great speed for an OLB (86/96). His top choice was hometown UGA followed by Clemson but failed to receive an offer from either. Johnson could possibly skip his redshirt and start day one. The coaching staff will have to decide if they have a team built for a title shot or if it is a rebuilding year.

Taylor Clark
#1443 ( #40 FS)
:star::star::star:
JRJucoIcon.png

OVR:81 (+2)
Clark will come in and fill in where needed. Will possibly look to move to OLB. Has exceptional speed (96/93) which could make him a special player at OLB.

Andre Gardner
#2425 ( #125 TE)
:star:
gem.png
JRJucoIcon.png

OVR:71 (+7)
UNC continues to be held together thanks to Junior College transfers. Gardner will redshirt to get his academics under control and then play back up for his two seasons.

Todd Castillo
#1650 ( #87 ATH)
:star::star:
JRJucoIcon.png

OVR:77 (+5)
Will come in and fill a need some place on defence. More than likely will redshirt and play CB but hoping he can fill in a OLB. No other schools showed interest in Castillo as he has been red flagged with a bad attitude.

Antoine Bonds
#616 ( #34 T)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

OVR:77 (+7)
North Carolina won the battle over FSU and Wake Forest for the next 5 years. Bonds choose UNC with the promise to be a 4 year starter. He will redshirt and then move in to a starting role at RT.

Tim Gold
#171 ( #9 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:76 (+1)
Will possibly move to center depending how the rest of the class pans out. Has the size to step in and play early. Will likely start somewhere as a redshirt freshman.

Casey Simmons
#184 ( #10 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+4)

Kenneth Jones
#1102 ( #83 OLB)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+2)

Josh Rushing
#1721 ( #84 MLB)

2022 Postseason Awards

BCS National Champions
North Carolina backs their way in to the title game even with close losses to #3 Clemson and #1 Virginia during the regular season only to get payback on Virginia. The Tar Heels put the game on the back of Heisman winner Brandon Moore and he didn't disappoint, rushing for 200+ yards and 2 TD's. Moore gave all the credit to the O-Line stating that they made holes that even coach Oye could run through. The offensive attack was very one sided with the passing game only gaining 47 yards. Sims and the offence came out passing on the first possession only for it to result in an INT. Between series the coaching staff threw out their entire game plan of airing it out and went to the trusty ground and pound attack.
Much of the credit had to go to the Defence who forced 4 key turnovers and a safety to allow the offence to focus on their ground game and time management.
The offseason could be shaky as many of the Tar Heels key players are Juniors with aspirations of the NFL.

SS-Luke Wood-Sr(R)
DT-Josh Crum-Jr(R)
MLB-Dennis Williams-Sr(R)
Ret-Tony Jordan-Sr(R)

Graduation Seniors
HB-Brandon Moore
Moore had quite the career at UNC. He was the 3rd string HB as a sophomore but moved up the depth chart due to injuries and never looked back. Moore was a 3 time Heisman finalist, winning it in 2022 and also setting the single season TD record at 49 while rushing for over 2000 yards. Moore's 99/99 speed will truly be missed next season. Moore projects as a late round draft pick
MLB-Dennis Williams
Williams moved from his recruited FS position to MLB the first day he stepped on campus and flourished during his starting time. Team leader in tackles for 2 years and winning the LB of the year award in 2022. Projected as a day 2 draft pick.
RG-Justin Powell
Powell was a 4 year starter at guard for UNC. Punishing run blocker projected as a late first round draft pick.
CB-Will Edwards
Edwards saw significant playing time all 4 years at UNC, starting the final 3. Projected 1st round draft pick whose speed will be missed.
QB-Andre Johnson
Johnson didn't live up to the hype when he first got on campus. Big time college football was a little to much for him to handle. Add in trouble in the classroom and with the playbook, Johnson found himself as a career backup. Johnson is likely to continue his career in the CFL.
OLB-Henry Hollis
Hollis came in as a JUCO and served his purpose as a depth linebacker, filling in where needed. Hollis will try and catch on as a rookie free agent.
HB-Tony Jordan
Jordan came in as a JUCO to possibly start his senior year and be a backup. Jordan got his shot as a sophomore but went down with an injury. Jordan found his role as a returner, earning All-ACC returner honors as a senior.
C-Scott Jones
Jones took one for the team when he moved from guard to center to provide more depth. Jones will likely still be a late round draft pick.
SS-Luke Wood
Minnesota kid that came in and flew under the radar to be a 3 year contributor and 2 year starter at SS. Ended up being the Jim Thorpe Award winner as a Senior. Wood had no flashy athletic abilities but knows where to be on the field to make a play. If Wood isn't drafted he plans to stay on staff as a grad assistant.
RE-Tim Hawk
Hawk was slated to be a 2 year starter but only started as a Junior. Was replaced by a younger playmaker during his senior year. Will sell insurance after college.
DT-Donald Williams
WR-Travis Bennett

Bennett served his time and was rewarded with a starting position as a senior. The sure handed WR will find a spot in the NFL on special teams some place.
FS-Eugene Cooke
Cooke was a 2 year starter at FS, earning All-American honors as a Junior. Cooke's blazing speed will likely get him a spot some place in the NFL.
OLB-Jon Williams
2 year starter at OLB. 2nd on the team in tackles during his senior season. Has a position as a crew member for a NASCAR team waiting for him after football. Likely wont graduate.
TE-Darryl Armstrong
Came in as a stop gap JUCO and filled his role.

2023 Preview

QB- Slade Sims won the QB battle early in the season last year and is the undisputed starter this season. Very rarely the fastest guy on the team plays QB, but at UNC he does. Sims hasn't been asked to run to the too much yet, but when he is called upon, he will use his 97/98 speed to fly past defenders. Sims also has the arm strength (93) to hit the deep man. Backing up Sims will be former 5 star recruit Cedric Fields. Fields doesn't have speed like Sims (but who does) but will still be able to run the ball when needed and has a nice developing cannon for an arm.

HB- The battle is on for who will be the bell cow of the offence. Former QB Adrian Herron will get more 1st team reps to start the year but the coaching staff has a soft spot for the bowling ball Scott Bennett. Herron is the more complete back but Bennett has the "it" factor that coaches can describe. Both backs will be returning kicks with the "hot" back likely to get the workload for the game.

WR- Terrell Day is back to lead the receiving corps again this season. Day, another former QB, has sure hands and a very quick first step. He won't beat many people deep but if they ball is near him, it will be caught. Omarr Jackson returns from his Biletnikoff winning season and will be lined up all over the field looking for mismatches. Jackson is an excellent route runner who can also take the top off of most defences. The battle for the 3rd WR spot has been tight so far with senior Dwayne Hall taking a slim lead. Hall has put in his time on the scout team and is excited to be able to contribute to the offence. Sophomores Curtis Thomas and Billy Turner will be fighting to get in the rotation as well.

TE- Jason Campbell will hold down the TE spot. He will primarily be used as a blocking H-back but could also be a threat in the red zone.

OL- For the 4th and final year, Josh Huff and Rashad Burnett will start at the tackle positions. Both are road graders who will have a chance to play on Sundays. Charles Simmons and Daryl Johnson will man the guard positions. Simmons (87) is the only OL under a 94 rating. At center, Adam Gray will be starting for a 3rd straight season. Gray will be the leader of the OL and is on the Rimington Award watch list. Could possibly be the best OL in UNC history.

DE- Seniors Jimmy Louis and Kareem Rush are back as book ends for the defence. Louis a former Lombardi Award winner will look to get back to results from his sophomore season.

DT- All-American Josh Crum is back at starting DT for a 3rd season. Crum will anchor what could be the best DL in UNC history.

LB-Linebacker has been the strength of the UNC defence for numerous seasons up until now. UNC will start 3 freshman at LB (one being a true freshman). Ricky Johnson had his redshirt pulled after 1 practice and will start at ROLB. Ed Miller will start at LOLB. MLB will be a battle between redshirt freshman Leigh Briggs and former FS Leroy Ellison.

CB-Pat Bowie, Tyler Edwards, James Washington, and Calvin Fernando have all put in their time at nickel/dime corner and on special teams but will finally have their time to shine as shutdown corners. All 4 are 94+.

Safety- Gone are All-Americans Eugene Cooke and Thorpe winner Luke Wood. E.J. Reese has been playing as a freshman in a backup role and during passing downs and should step in fine. Senior Mike Walker has been waiting for his time as a starter and its finally here. Walker has good speed for a SS and will spend a majority of his time close to the LOS.

2023 Recruiting

Eugene Bush
Valdese, NC
#267 (#16 OLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+5)
Bush comes in to add to an already young and star studded OLB crew. Has great speed for an OLB (85/99). UNC was his only offer. Will redshirt and likely play backup a couple years before getting his shot.

Dennis Davis
Bethel Park, PA
#55 ( #4 DT)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:78
The #4 DT in the country picked UNC over hometown Penn State early in the recruiting process. Davis isn't anything flashy physically, but is a great technician.

Nick Clark
Lake Forest, IL
#237 ( #24 DE)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+5)
Clark will come in and see early playing time after his redshirt year. He has the size, speed, and athletic ability to be a dominant pass rusher. UNC was Clark's only D-1 offer.

Trevor Lowery
Brentwood, PA
#482 ( #49 HB)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

OVR:75 (+8)
Trevor was overlooked in his small town by all schools except for the UNC track team who turned the football team on to him.
Lowery will likely redshirt and then become the starter the following year. His redshirt will depend on the remainder of the class and if Herron and Bennett decide to leave for the NFL or come back.

Nate Moore
North Bethesda, MD
#2395 ( #41 FB)
:star:
gem.png

OVR:68 (+10)
Another NE gem find by the UNC staff. Moore didn't start football until his junior year of high school so was overlooked by most Power 5 schools. He could possibly step in and start from day 1, or he could redshirt and the coaching staff could stick in an OL or TE at FB for a year.

Tony McDaniel
Trinidad, CO
#492 ( #59 ATH)
:star::star::star:
OVR:70 (+4)
Not sure where Tony will end up next fall. Projects as a WR but also has some coverage skills.

Cameron Pollock
Carnot-Moon, PA
#139 ( #11 TE)
:star::star::star::star:
top150.png

OVR:79 (+4)
Pollock is a monster at 6'8 257. He could possibly be moved to an OT due to his extreme blocking skills. Also has good speed (80/77) for a kid his size. Will also play basketball during his time at UNC.

Lou Lawson
Sun Lakes, AZ
#612 ( #39 DT)
:star::star::star:
gem.png

OVR:75 (+6)
The defensive line should be set for the next many years with the signing of Lawson. Lawson has been overlooked by many scouts as he was unable to go to the "elite" camps. UNC was Lawson's only D1 offer. Will primarily be a back up and a good one at that.

2024 Recruiting

R.J. Green
#425 ( #25 G)
:star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+6)
Green will help fill a gaping hole along on the offensive line coming seasons. Numbers are slim with only 1 reserve OL this and next season. Green has a great first step and is a natural run blocker. He will use spring ball and a redshirt year to get acclimated to being moved to OT out of necessity.

Terrence McCauley
#25 ( #3 DE)
:star::star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (-1)
McCauley may be a bit undersized at 6'2 240lbs but makes up for it in speed and technique. He played mainly OLB in high school and will have a little bit of a learning curve but a redshirt year should help that.

Charles Hudson
#318 ( #18 G)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (-3)
Product of Baldwin, New York who will fill a much needed hole as a back up lineman. Has decent run blocking skills but will need to work on his pass blocking game in order to find a starting spot in the future. Will redshirt and primarily be a back up until his senior year.

Chris Diggs
#953 ( #6 K)
:star::star::star:
OVR:84 (+3)

Will step in and take over kicking and punting duties right away. 85 power, 85 accuracy. Should develop in to a nice kicker.

Ben White
#282 ( #7 FS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+2)

Another good product out of Texas. White will redshirt and wait some time before seeing meaningful playing time. Has good speed (92/89) that could get him on the field a little earlier.

Tommy Dennis
#127 ( #34 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:75 (+2)
Dennis will likely move someplace along the OL and use his redshirt year to beef up his 6'3 267 lb frame but could make for a good pulling guard.

Brian Greene
#1154 ( #7 K)
:star::star::star:
OVR:82 (+4)
Will battle it out with fellow kicker recruit Chris Diggs for kicking duties. Loser will be relegated to punter and redshirt.

Rob Hunt
#1494 ( #79 T)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+5)
Will redshirt and develop in to a quality backup.

Ron Adams
#129 ( #3 SS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:77
Great size (6'4 192) and speed (92/91) for a Strong Safety. Has the ability to play close to the line in press coverage and utilize his ability to shed off blockers. Will redshirt and then get on the field quickly to help with special teams

Eric Williams
#120 ( #32 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+6)

James Roberts
#63 ( #2 MLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:81 (+4)

Jamie Norton
#1108 ( #91 DE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:65

Dustin Strickland
#931 ( #151 WR)
:star::star::star:
OVR:68 (+7)

Rodney Miller
#949 ( #74 DE)
:star::star::star:

James McKeon
#596 ( #35 G)
:star::star::star:
OVR:70 (+1)
Hometown kid that will add good depth to the OL.

Adam Stephens
#141 ( #3 FS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+4)
Stephens is a very athletic FS coming out of Florida. Has good speed (90/91) and will develop better coverage skills. Stephens will be deep on the depth chart for a bit but will make a name for himself on special teams before being a multi-year starter.

Mike Cameron
#108 ( #6 CB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+3)
Having multiple assistant coaches in Pennsylvania is really starting to pay off. Cameron joins the list of ESPN top 150 recruits to venture down south to warmer weather. Cameron has amazing speed (96/96) and a great set of coverage skills (80/89) for an incoming recruit. He could step on the field day one but the coaching staff will likely redshirt him. He will join a young defensive backfield next season.

Aaron Taylor
#1125 ( #64 ATH)
:star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+1) Juco
Decent speed (92/91). Will most likely fill in at WR after he redshirts and gets on track academically.

Brandon Simpson
#30 ( #8 WR)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+3)
With the recent success of wide outs at UNC, the states top WR decided to stay home with the hopes of being the schools next Biletnikoff award winner.

John Miles
#1774 ( #137 T)
:star::star: (Juco So)
OVR:73 (+4)
Depth signing as of now. Could develop in to a starter by his senior year.

Robert Schmidt
#1284 ( #176 WR)
:star::star::star:
OVR:68 (+7)
Long strided receiver who will spend his entire redshirt year working with the track team to improve his quickness (96 speed/74 acceleration). Schmidt has been taken on as a low risk project. If he can get his quickness figured out, he could be dangerous.

Keith Morris
#1620 ( #95 G)
:star::star::star:
OVR:66 (+4)
Pure depth signing so future recruits don't have to burn their redshirt being a back up for a few plays. Will put in his time and possibly see the field more towards the end of his career.

Tony Brock
#508 ( #20 G)

Good depth signing from North Carolina. Has the size to develop in to a good OL.

Andrew Sparks
#84 ( #24 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+4)
top150.png

Projects to play as a WR or HB. Has good size (6'2 209) for both.

Charlie Savoy
#998 ( #57 TE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+6)
gem.png

The signing of Savoy brings in much needed depth at TE. Pollock will possibly leave at seasons end which will leave a gaping hole. Savoy will need to put on his big boy boots and step right in. If Pollock decides to stay for his Junior season, Savoy will redshirt but still travel with the team.

Kevin Sellers
#151 ( #10 MLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+5)
Sellers will be the next tackling machine at North Carolina. He doesn't have the blazing speed of the guys before him but he makes up for it in every other part of his game.

LaMarr Burke
#1804 ( #143 OLB)
:star::star:
OVR:67 (+6)
gem.png

Burke's rating doesn't do him justice, he is a freak. He is 6'6 231 and fast (88/90). With that frame he could possibly move to DE and be a nasty pass rusher. Burke hit a growth spurt between his junior and senior year of high school so he went unnoticed luckily for the Tar Heels. He will be a big of a project but has a high ceiling.

Matt Nichols
#51 ( #20 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+4)
top150.png

Nichols is being called a once in a generation talent. He as size (6'7 225), speed (90/82), and the "it" factor that coaches can't seem to put a finger on. The coaching staff is under a lot of pressure to utilize him correctly. In high school he played every position except QB. The coaching staff is leaning on possibly using him as a safety but will also give him a chance at WR and HB.

FS-Greg Alvarez-93 OVR
QB-Cedric Fields-99 OVR

Projected as a 1st round top 10 draft pick. Scouts are very looking forward to what Fields can do in a pro style offence instead of the "junk" he was running in college.
LOLB-Kyle Houston-89 OVR
Projected as a 4th round draft pick. Houston was a key reserve for the past 3 seasons and really impressed scouts at the combine.
WR-Robert Martin-96 OVR
Projected late 1st round draft pick. Martin really had to step up this season with the top 3 receiving targets leaving last season. He was a "move the chains" type of guy with sure hands. Martin will likely move in to his more natural position in the slot at the next level.
MLB-Leigh Briggs-94 OVR
Projected 3rd round draft pick. 3 year All-American, 4 year starter, and 2024 LB of the Year award winner. Which ever team is lucky enough to get Briggs will be happily surprised. He doesn't have the workout numbers to blow anybody away but is a sure tackling machine.
LOLB-Ed Miller-94 OVR
ROLB-Ricky Johnson-94 OVR

Projected early 2nd round draft pick. 4 year starter, 4 year All-American. Had his redshirt pulled after being on campus for 2 days. Never missed a play.

The Tar Heels had an up and down year, mainly due to their head coach being pulled away for undisclosed matters. Despite having 99 OVR QB Cedric Fields, the team couldn't quite find their passing rhythm. WR speedster Terrance Ford was injured multiple times during the year and ended up playing a total of 3 games. The coaching staff was depending on using is speed to stretch the field. Without Ford they had to use more predictable ground and pound offence. Sophomore Randall Wood really shined in year 2 amassing close to 2000 yards rushing and 30 TD's. Robert Martin was the leading receiver with a little of 1000 yards receiving while Sophomore TE Cameron Pollock stepped up as a legit red zone target pulling in 18 TD's to go along with 700+ yards. The OL was the strength of the team with 4 Juniors and 1 sophomore and all being 90+. If they all decide to come back next year they could be dangerous.
Coming in to the season everybody knew that if you wanted to beat UNC, all you had to do was pass on their inexperienced corners(2 sophomores and 1 freshman) and that held true. They will need to hit the books and weights hard in the offseason and will be counted on to make plays next season as 3 safeties graduate and will be replaced by freshman.
UNC had one of the best front seven in the nation but it did little good. The trio of Johnson, Briggs, and Miller will be missed at LB as they became coaches on the field for the last 2 seasons.
The draft could hit the Tar Heels hard this year with most of their top tier talent being Juniors. If everybody would decide to return, they could have a team that could make a run at the ACC title.

Seth Rankin
#69 ( #9 HB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:73 (-1)
top150.png

Rankin signed with UNC despite knowing that he will have to wait his turn to get his carries. He has the speed(93/92) to be a legit starting running back but will need to add some bulk to his 5'10 186lb frame to take the beatings of the ACC defenses. Will redshirt his first year on campus and then possibly fight for a starting spot as a kick returner and possibly get a few carries behind Andrew Sparks.

Dustin Blankenship
#179 ( #6 T)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+3)
New Jersey native who comes in and will solidify the offensive line for years to come. Has his work cut out for him in terms of climbing the depth chart, but with guys possibly leaving early for the draft could see the field as a back up as early as his second season on campus. Shows a great first step and great pass blocking technique. He played in an up tempo spread offence in high school but has the size (6'6 304) to be a great run blocker as well.
UNC was his only division 1 offer although showing interest in Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.

Andre Willis
#143 ( #4 G)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+3)

top150.png

Willis will continue the tradition of great run blocking guards at UNC. Will have the opportunity to be a 3 year starter depending on how the draft goes. The addition of Willis will likely help the move of Charles Hudson from RG to Center next season. Willis will need to work on his pass blocking technique during his redshirt year. Willis will also be participated on the track and field team throwing the shot put.

Maurice Ruffin
#707 ( #34 QB)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+3)

Ruffin was signed on a partial athletic and partial academic scholarship. His primary role for the next 5 years will be holding extra points as a backup.

Keenan Griffith
#570 ( #17 SS)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+1)

Griffith will possibly move to OLB. Has good size and speed for a DB but lacks coverage skills to be depended on.

Johnny Key
#117 ( #29 ATH)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+5)

top150.png

Johnny Key has been called Johnny Football 2.0 in his home state of Pennsylvania. At 5'11 200 he doesn't have the prototypical size most teams would want at QB but he has the athleticism to make plays. Could possibly be sprinkled in as a WR if needed.

J.R. Robinson
#397 ( #34 DE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:73 (+2)
Has great size (6'6 262) and speed (80) for a DE. The coaching staff have a few other irons in the fire for future DE recruits but Robinson will likely end up being a key backup with the possibility to start after a few years. UNC was his only D1 offer.

Jeff Roberson
#124 ( #8 MLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+3)
top150.png

Roberson signs despite knowing he won't have a starting spot for quite some time. He isn't as fast as recent MLB at UNC but has a knack for finding the ball and being in the right place at the right time.

Demetrius Peters
#199 ( #4 OLB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+4)

Leroy Edwards

Season Recap
Once again the Tar Heels had and up and down season with the highlight being handing National Champion Virginia their lone loss and the low part of the season being a tight loss to Nebraska that ended the Tar Heels hopes of backing in to the National Championship game.
The Tar Heels graduate possibly their best OL in their history under coach Oye. The 4 graduating have a combined 11 All-American awards with 2 1st round draft picks and 2 2nd round draft picks. The team also graduates 2 of the best defensive linemen in team history in Banks and Smith.
Next season the Defense brings back 8 starters who were thrown to the fire at a young age and should be poised to make a run now with some experience under their belt. The offence loses pretty much the entire offensive line, starting QB, and deep threat WR Terrance Ford. The pieces are in place for replacements and the offence shouldn't miss a beat but will be a more run oriented offence next season with the return of Randall Wood at HB.

Justin Davis
#134 ( #3 SS)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:78 (+3)
top150.png

Justin Davis decided to stay home and sign with the Tar Heels. Many schools were thrown off by his size (5'9, 175) but Davis plays like a linebacker in a safety's body. He is a tackling machine who will likely play up around the LOS.

Gregg Williams
#35 ( #3 DE)
:star::star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+1)
top150.png

Georgia native Gregg Williams signed with North Carolina over his other offer from Auburn. Williams is a little undersized at 6'4, 220. Williams has a wide frame and will likely live in the weight room during his redshirt year. He has all of the technique to become a dominating DE for the future.

Ryan Tidwell
#82 ( #1 DT)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+3)
top150.png

The #1 DT in the nation choose to attend UNC over the likes of BYU, Utah, Arkansas State, and Utah State. UNC had the edge from day 1 over all other schools despite showing great interest in Nebraska and Virginia. Tidwell is built like an ox and will be a run plugger up the middle.

David Scott
#767 ( #5 P)
:star::star::star:
OVR:81 (+1)
Former soccer player from California who didn't quite have the speed to keep up. Will likely switch to kicker during spring ball. Comes in with a powerful leg (91) but will need to work on his accuracy (72) during camp.

Travis Brown
#656 ( #33 G)
:star::star::star:
OVR:77 (+8)
gem.png

Brown was overlooked by many recruiters due only being 263 lbs, but if they would have done their research a little deeper they would have found that he has grown 8 inches and put on 130 lbs in the last 2 years without losing his quickness. Brown may possibly move to his more natural position of Center depending on how the rest of the recruiting class pans out.

Tony Reyes
#117 ( #24 WR)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:72 (+1)
top150.png

Reyes isn't anything flashy as a WR but will fill a future need. Could develop in to a good mid range WR with decent speed and decent hands.

Travis Jackson
#773 ( #6 P)
:star::star::star:
OVR:78 (-3)
The signing of Jackson solidifies the move of David Scott to kicker. Jackson will have the rare assignment of redshirting as a kicker or punter. During this time he will be working on getting his accuracy(67) up to go along with his already booming power(90).

Joe Mills
#823 ( #44 TE)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (+3)
Mills fills a spot of need on the roster. He is quite undersized for a TE at 6'3 227 and could possibly be moved to fullback. Look for him to redshirt and mainly be a backup for his career.

John Watkins

2029 Recruiting

Dave Powers
#26 ( #6 WR)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+2)
top150.png

In state recruit Powers decided to stay home and sign with the Tar Heels. Powers has pretty good speed(92/91), decent size (6'1 189) and good hands. Will likely play early as a #4/5 and work his way up the chart.

Trey Woods
#63 ( #1 CB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:79 (+1)
top150.png

The signing of Woods is a sigh of relief for the coaching staff. Woods is dynamite in coverage but will need to work on his toughness against the run to be a true star. Will redshirt and likely start the following year for the remainder of his career.

Brock Chambers
#111 ( #5 CB)
:star::star::star::star:
OVR:80 (+4)
top150.png

Woods and Chambers look to be the future of the CB position for the next 4 years after their redshirt season. Chambers has amazing coverage skills for a true freshman (88/88/88) to go along with good speed (94/95) and isn't afraid to step up and lay the wood on run coverage.

Colin Young
#443 ( #15 T)
:star::star::star:
OVR:69 (-3)
Young is making the move from Nevada to back East where he grew up. Young has the size to develop in to a starter some day but will need to work on his technique. Young will redshirt and be a back up for a few years before possibly getting the chance to start.

Offence
The offence will bring back 6 starters from last seasons 11 win team. The Tar Heels will be led by a trio of skill position players highlighted by returning All-American Andrew Sparks at HB.

QB- Kevin Connor enters his 3rd and final season starting for the Tar Heels. Connor has been streaky good in the past and looks to fulfill a leadership role this season. Connor doesn't have the big arm that most teams are looking for but does well with the short to intermediate throws. He has excellent speed for a QB but shies away from contact when running with the ball. Connor will likely have another nice 4000+ yard season with 40+ TD's but look for freshman Joe Davis to get some reps during each game as the coaching staff builds for the future. Davis is quite short for a QB but has the athleticism to scramble and make plays to go along with his cannon for an arm.

HB- Junior Andrew Sparks hopes to build upon last years All-American performance. He has hit the weight room hard in the off season to hopefully run through more arm tackles. Last season Sparks struggles grinding out the tough yards. If he can show that he can run between the tackles, the NFL may be calling come the offseason.

WR/TE- The receiving corps will be led by 4th year starter Brandon Simpson. Simpson regressed a little last season as he transitioned to a more conventional WR instead of primarily going deep like in his sophomore season. Joining Simpson will be the twin towers of 6'7 Matt Nichols and 6'4 Stacy Thurman. The coaching staff hasn't quite figured out what combination they will use of the 3. Charlie Savoy returns for his 3rd straight year starting at TE. He was recruited very lightly coming out of high school but has really put the time and effort in to the weight room and playbook to become a solid TE. Savory is sneaky quick with amazing hands.

OL- The line returns 2 starters from last year with one of them being former #1 T Patrick Harrison. There will be a battle in camp for the other tackle position between sophomore Dustin Blankenship and freshman John Watkins. Watkins is the more balanced of the two but lacks experience. Blankenship is a pass blocking specialist who will do a decent job run blocking when needed. Andre Willis returns as the starting right guard who will look to join forces with Harrison and be road graders on the right side. Another camp battle will be for the left guard position between senior Keith Morris and freshman Keith Diggs. Morris holds the early advantage due to experience but the upside of Diggs gives him a short leash. James McKeon finally gets his shot to start at C after waiting in the wings of All-American and Rimington Award winner Tommy Dennis.

Defence
The Defence only returns 2 starters from last season, All-Americans Kevin Sellers and ROLB Demetrius Peters. The Defence will be young, starting only 2 seniors.

DE- Ray Jacobs, Trevor Webb, and Gregg Williams were all standout DE's in high school and have been chomping at the bit to get on the field. A mixture of the 3 will be in rotation all season.

DT- The undersized and over picked on Kevin Sellers will be the man at DT again this season. Sellers often gets teased about being the smallest DT in Tar Heels history but that gives him a bigger chip on his shoulder during the game. Sellers is usually too fast for big offensive lineman and is constantly disrupting the QB's timing. Sellers high motor gets him in trouble from time to time and when he needs a break he has two reliable backups waiting. Sophomore JR Robinson and freshman Ryan Tidwell will share time at DT.

LB- The outside linebackers will be full of speed this season. Peters(87/99) returns for his 3rd starting season after having his redshirt pulled. Fellow junior LaMarr Burke will man the LOLB. Burke has the size (6'6 240) to rush the edge and the speed (93/96) to cover most receivers and tight ends. Pennsylvania product Jeff Roberson will man the middle. He doesn't have blistering speed like the other two but has great vision and a knack for finding the ball.

CB- Here is where the team gets a little shaky. Early departures from CB Shane Weber and FS Adam Stephens have left the DB cupboard a little light. Mike Cameron is the only player returning with any significant playing time. The coaching staff has already decided to pull the red shirt from freshman standout Brock Chambers to play nickel. Chambers has the physical ability to step right in but is still a little behind the playbook.

Safety- At FS Greg Wilson will step in as the next man up. Wilson has good speed but will need to catch up to the speed of the game after only playing on special teams last season. At SS Kevin Hampton and Justin Davis were supposed to be in rotation but and off the field incident has Davis' eligibility for the coming season in question. If Davis is unable to go, the another red shirt may need to get pulled. This time from Tom Thomas(wtf were his parents thinking?)

Special Teams- Two first timers will take over the punting and kicking duties. David Scott and Travis Jackson both have cannons for legs. Seth Rankin will keep the job of KR and PR with Brandon Simpson also being on KR.

Morales is the pride of the Tar Heels recruiting class this season. Morales has the size (5'11 208), speed (95/96), arm (90/78), and coverage ability (86/78/79) to be a true difference maker starting day 1. Every position coach is trying to get him.
