Welcome to my first ever dynasty thread. More to come in the weeks, months and years ahead.

i will be re-enacting my high school alma mater's football seasons from 1972 (opening of the school) to 2001. Possibly beyond if inclinations deem necessary and feasible. This will probably take two plus years and will start slowly as there is sill early research for me to complete (for instance I still must procure actual full rosters for 1972 and 1973). Plus I'm easily sidetracked.

soon I will issue a post detailing certain items as 1) why I'm doing this 2) the research that will Be conducted 3) the parameters I have and will establish to produce a realistic simulated reenactment 4)the variations ( artistic license if you will) that will be introduced to allow for me to slightly "change history." My high school has never won a state championship. The tears of both cris collinsworth and Wilbur Marshall fell upon the turf in semifinal losses in each of their respective senior seasons. Late season playoff heartache was again felt twice at the close of the millennium. We will seek to change this.

i welcome your insight, comments and suggestions throughout the journey. I've never done this and I'm old and still have aol addresses so if there is any technological insight you whippersnappers have it will be appreciated.

So one of the things I needed to do to get this thing going is buy a new PS3, because mine crapped out on me on Super Bowl Sunday. I've accomplished this step tonight as it was the first work night I've been out of the office by 6:30 since about the middle of January. So apparently I can't get just a PS3 but I get this bundle package with this game called the "The Last of Us." I have no idea what this game is. I only play sports games. I guess I tried to play Godfather at one point but got bored driving the wrong way down roads or something.

So that being said. Does anyone have any interest in this "the Last of Us Game" game? I'm willing to part with it for the low low price of your address or P.O. Box or whatever. Hit up the private box if you want it. I suppose you could sell it for 15 or 30 or whatever is the going rate on ebay. I don't know how to do that kind of stuff though, old aol email addresses and all, ya know.

There should be some sort of step-by-step guide that allows you to sell the game on eBay. Chances are it's already pre-listed, so you don't need to do too much.

Going to throw some ?'s out for suggestions.

1- how should I handle injuries? Should I set injury rating based on players injury status that year and let the game randomize them? Or if someone actually missed a chunk of games should I purposely hold them out of those games? Or both?

2-I plan to do a "where are they now" on certain players. Should this occur during thur career ie as a sidebar or 20 years down the road?

This. Everybody gets to play to the best of their health. If you hold out your players, you might see them transfer.

Excellent. This will also allow for a random variation from history of which I do not control. If QB goes down with a leg injury, the team will suffer.

If Astronaut High is rolling, you can sub out Cris and bring in his backup to manage the game.

This happened from time to time. One reason why his numbers are not that impressive. Plus having to share the rushing load with some characters you will meet later, namely current Chicago bears line backing coach.

If your team is balanced and everybody can make plays, it's fine for Cris to have unimpressive [sic] numbers, so long as the positive results keep piling up.

I'm going to disagree with Hach... I'm not following this dynasty to see Cris subbed out at halftime! Players gonna play.

But what if Astronaut High is up by more than seven scores, Travis? Cris will need to keep playing if the margin is close, but if it isn't and it's decisive by the end of the third quarter, would you rather see him go down to a season-ending injury, or would you rather rest him for the next opponent where he may need to go the distance because the opponent is tougher? #Choices

The youngsters will get some garbage time. But this gets ahead of ourselves. QB doesn't see the varsity field until '74.

The summer of '72 will bring dual tragedy to the small town before the squad plays it's first game.

Why Am I Doing This
Q: Why would you seek to re-enact 30+ years of high school football history?

A: First reason is it’s an inexpensive hobby. It keeps me off the streets aka the casinos and other sinful establishments. Or it keeps me from being in those places every weekend, all weekend :).

Second, I am a sports sim/stats junkie since my youth. I created a “fantasy” game using my baseball and football cards and taking the stats off the back, rolling dice, picking play outcomes out of a hat, etc.. I would draft teams and play “fantasy” world series and superbowls. Then when vidya games came about I would sim with those, keeping stats. I used a real scorekeeping book to track play by play on Bases Loaded on the Original NES. I used Ten Yard Fight and imagined the quarterback was Major Harris and kept the stats for that crappy little game. I kept my stats for my fictional created player in Double Dribble, and for his two cohorts in this crappy 3 on 3 fullcourt basketball game. Then came the games that kept your stats for you. Now the work was easy, I’d just have to write them down after the game from the game summary. I was a scorekeeper for little league baseball and YMCA basketball for several years. Compiling stats for the coaches and the league, even keeping score for every game in the senior division of the local little league one season as a senior in high school, save for the game that occurred on my high school graduation night.

Third, I attended and followed the Astronaut football team from 1990 to 2001. I’ve recreated several of those seasons several times over on various football video games. It had been some time that I recreated the years I was in high school, 1990-1994. Since I had several newspaper clippings, programs, and the like for 1995-2001, I have a lot of data compiled for this time period. However, this year for some reason I got the itch to recreate 1990-1993, the seasons of my high school years. In order to refresh my memory and collect some stats I began searching for articles of games during that time period. Luckily, the Orlando Sentinel archives contained several game articles, however stats in the articles were limited. In finding these I also discovered that the Sentinel went back to 1985 in its archives. So I began reading up on the games before my time in school. This berthed the idea of searching for articles back to the 1970’s.

Everyone who attends the school knows about QB and TE, the school's only High School All-Americans and the first two to play in the NFL (since then DB and TE have played in the NFL). When you walk through the lobby of the school the trophy case you come upon has two plaques with the retired jersey’s of QB (21) and TE (88) along with an engraving of their accomplishments/school records. Btw, in 1976-1977 the Senior QB and the Freshman TE were both members of Astronaut’s state-runner up basketball team. Therefore, discovering the details of their high school careers in the 1970’s was a key element to my looking back into the 1970’s. But the Orlando Sentinel archives did not go back that far. I then discovered Google Newspaper Archives and began searching. But the local paper (the Florida Today) was not archived. However, I was able to find some game articles of the final playoff games of QB and TE by searching the articles of the local papers of their foes.

This lead me to the idea of the 30 year dynasty (which the kind Hachiko tells me I may expand to up to 60 years). But to do this I would need more data. I have no clue save for a few tidbits of what happens from 1972-1984. The best source of data would be the Florida Today, which contains the box scores for the high school games in Brevard County, aka “The Space Coast.” However, these archives are not online. This leads to the research phase, which will be ongoing throughout the dynasty. The central library in Brevard county contains Microfilm of the florida today back to 1966. I’ve spent many an hour there over the past few months capturing digital scans of the game articles. I have completed 1972 to mid-1977 thus far. Therefore, it is a good time to “launch” this dynasty. I still have a few set up tasks to complete so games are not ready to be played yet. However, this will be a labor of love that hopefully will keep me clean for a couple years.

And finally, why do this?

Simulation Reenactment parameters
My main goal is to create as close to realistic conditions in the play of the game to simulate a high school game (not possible in all aspects obviously).
Key Points:
  • Game difficulty adjustment standards: I am not a great player at the NCAA games. I.e. I can’t just beat the computer on Heisman difficulty 45-0 using Georgia State vs. Alabama. Therefore, I have created standards for adjusting the difficulty level of offense and defense based on the quality of the opponent and actual outcomes of the games that actually occurred. In game adjustments are used at various intervals to simulate the ebb and flow of the game as it actually occurred, based on box score data and actual game article.
  • Game length standards: Another key goal is to get the right number of plays per game, on average. Which is around 100 per game. It may vary between 80-120 based on various factors, as you may well know. But the typical high school game over 48 minutes I’ve found is around 100 plays per game. In order to capture the relative speed of each game I have developed adjustments to the game length based on the actual points scored in the actual historical game. Lowest scoring games are 8 minute quarters (with a conservative clock) and highest scoring games are 12 minute quarters (with a conservative clock). 80 yard drives in under 1 minute to win games will not be common. I’ve tested this standard over several test seasons and it works for me to get a desired game result and a per game plays average of close to 100.

  • Player and Team progression: The initial 1972 roster is built via teambuilder. Each player will have a maximum overall rating based upon their achieved level of accolade. I.e. All-state 1[sup]st[/sup] team players will have a higher maximum rating than All-state 2[sup]nd[/sup] team, etc. etc. Only two players will allowed to be overall 99, QB and TE. They may achieve this rating in their senior years. Most players will have an initial freshman year rating which is developed by taking their senior year maximum rating and reducing that for what I have found to be average progression for each year. I.e. Example, TE will be 99 his senior year because he was an All-American. He will have increased his overall rating by 3 from JR to SR, by 4 from SO to JR and by 5 from FR to SO. Therefore his initial maximum rating as a freshman will be 87.
  • Opponents: From 1972 to 2001, the school has played 326 games (with a record of 222-102-2). I’ve identified the opponents/schedule for 308 of those games. Based on this preponderance I have identified the 11 most common opponents. I have found other teambuilder teams for those opponents and they will be imported into the dynasty, along with my team. All 12 schools will be independents to allow for maximum flexibility in scheduling. These 11 teams account for 197 of the 326 games, so I feel this is pretty good coverage. Any team played that is not an imported team will obviously need to be some other college team in the game (this is where the 12 team import limit screws me). I will choose opponents that are similar in competency and uniform color to the actual opponent.
  • Coach editing standards: The 2014 game of football is much different than the 1972 game of football which is different from the 80’s and 90’s. Opponents coaches will be edited to control for style of play. I.e. in the 1970’s no Air raid offenses, more run oriented offenses, conservative etc. As actual trends change through the years the extent to which coaches are edited will change as well.
  • Penalty Sliders: One thing I’ve noticed in my data collection is that high school teams are undisciplined. Therefore, offensive penalty sliders are set to the max. Defense penalty sliders are set to the default. This is because in test seasons defensive penalties gave offenses great scoring opportunities when defensive sliders were set to max. In my research a common trend is lower scoring games (when opponents are of similar strength) and drive’s stalling due to offensive penalties.

  • Recruiting: New recruits will be edited to fit into the roster and have no more overall rating then their maximum rating. My only real caveat here is that I will recruit most exclusively in Florida. The recruiting part is really irrelevant as I’m just filling roster spots and editing the newcomers.
  • Playbooks: Will be adjusted over the course of time to capture changing styles. I.e. I will not bring in shotgun formations until 1980 and only in a limited fashion. In the mid 80’s wishbone formations will go by the wayside, etc. The initial playbook will be a heavily run oriented based on I formations, including Maryland, Power, Strong and Weak I. Wing bone, Wishbone and Goaline will fill out the playbook. As stated Wingbone and Wishbone will be replaced in the 80’s with a little more pass oriented plays.

Variations from history
I will take a little artistic license in a couple of areas.

First, the coaches during the dynasty will the fictional B. Mack. Although in most instances actual results will seek to be replicated, any variations from actual results will be based on the coaching acumen of Coach Mack.

Second, Coach Mack will use his persuasion skills to convince certain superstar players to join the varsity squad early, which may result in slight changes in game results. For instance, down the road Coach Mack will convince a Freshman running back to join the varsity squad rather than move onto basketball season as the starting point guard. The running back ended up being the school’s all-time leading rusher. Coach Mack will identify this talent early and convince him to join what a mediocre squad, with the hopes of altering a bit of history.
From 1972 to 1983 the school had an all-state level caliber quarterback in all but one of those years. From 1984 on I do not believe there has been another all-state quarterback. This is a deficiency that will be altered at various times.

The first measure will be coach mack convincing a couple of outstanding athletes in other sports (football and baseball) who never played football to join the squad and compete for the starting quarterback slot. This will only occur in 4 of the 30 years so it is not a huge diversion. To make this a random bit of event I will only bring them onto the squad by recruiting an athlete which will convert to a quarterback. I.e. if when these gents are freshman there is no athlete to convert to a qb they will not join the squad that year. Further attempts will be made in their sophomore year, etc. If in the event they join the squad they will then compete with the existing qb’s based on rating, the existing qb’s rating being the maximum per the established standards and the fictional qb based on its rating assigned by the game.

Another measure will be the sons of Coach Mack. Unlike the real Bmack, the fictional coach mack will not be opposed to marriage and will have a wife and will have sons. And of course, coaches sons end up being quarterbacks a lot of the time. The aforementioned Athlete recruiting strategy will be used to randomize this a bit. Coach Mack will be in his mid 20’s in 1972 so he will have sons entering high school in approximately 1981 or so. This is down the line a bit and will be developed as the dynasty unfolds.

Finally, Coach Mack will be a favorite of his players. When I was in school I asked the leading rusher one year why he hadn’t played the year before. He stated it was because he disliked the coach at the time, but when a new coach came in he came back out to the squad. I feel this is a reason that during a certain point in history the squad numbered only 26 players or so rather than the 45 or so they carried in the earlier time periods. This obviously kept talent off the team and allowed for fatigue to be more of a factor due to the smaller roster and players playing iron man football more often (Iron man football will still be played as many players were two-way standouts throughout history). Because Coach Mack will be a likeable coach this attrition will be mitigated and certain players who sat out years will be on the squad.

One thing I need suggestions on is that in at least two instances I know of star running backs served one or two game suspensions for various incidents. My quandary is whether to let this happen as it occurred, or should Coach Mack’s influence be such that this incidents did not occur, thus altering history.

Also, any other suggestions, comments, and/or criticisms of what has been posted so far in the development of this dynasty and plans for it are most certainly welcomed and appreciated. Snarky comments welcome as well. Let's have some fun with it.

NEXT STEPS: Need to finalize Teambuilder initial roster. Then develop background storyline leading into the 1972 season.

I say keep the discipline angle in the dynasty, because I always thought that was an element that was missing on next-gen. Teenagers acting like idiots is one of the true challenges any coach faces, and as much as you might wish/think you can provide good influence on these youngins, the truth is they will make mistakes and get caught making those mistakes.

One of the years I coached middle school we would have surely gone undefeated if I could have ever gotten the best middle school athlete I've ever seen to play. As a 7th grader he was literally my size (6'4 - 220) and faster than me by a good bit. He was the most frustrating player I've ever coached because he had zero work ethic, was a huge trouble maker, but was also jovial and easy going so he gave you hope and you couldn't really get mad at him. He obviously got suspended due to being the class clown and missed the first two games. I really thought I was making progress with him and he was supposed to make his triumphant debut in our 3rd game.... I talked with him at the end of practice the day before the game and thought we had a great heart to heart conversation and that he was really turning a corner. Five minutes later I see him being lead away from the school in handcuffs because he broke into the teachers lounge and smashed a vending machine open with a chair to get some fucking fruit punch, and the school resource officer caught him. That was the end of his season.

I still see him around town all the time doing hood rat things, and I always SMH@ him and go up and talk to him about what he is doing in life. He's a Junior in High School and is now like 6'6 250 and still getting in trouble and to my knowledge has yet to play a down of organized football despite going out for the team every year.

AND SO IT BEGINS...

In 1948 there were five schools in North Brevard: Titusville High School, Titusville Elementary School, Mims Negro Elementary School, Titusville Elementary and High School for Negroes, and Mims Elementary School.
In the fifties, this area began to increase in population and new buildings were needed. Gibson Elementary and High School for Negroes was built on Sycamore St. in Titusville. This school was named for Andrew Gibson, who came to Titusville before 1900 and was a persistent champion for the betterment of education for his race.
In 1971 Astronaut High School was built in the northwestern part of town to relieve Titusville High School of some of its nearly 3000 students. Many students are bussed to A.H.S. and T.H.S. now transports many students from Port St. John. Astronaut High School is a one-building structure, which includes all classrooms, a gym, a library, auditorium, cafeteria, and administrative suite.

http://www.nbbd.com/godo/history/schools/

Astronaut High School will serve the northern end of Titusville, as well as unincorporated Mims and the rest of north Brevard. The need for the school is necessitated by the population increase during the 1960’s related to the growth of the nation’s space program.

The Statement by President Nixon, 5 January 1972.
I have decided today that the United States should proceed at once with the development of an entirely new type of space transportation system designed to help transform the space frontier of the 1970's into familiar territory, easily accessible for human endeavor in the 1980's and '90's.

This system will center on a space vehicle that can shuttle repeatedly from Earth to orbit and back. It will revolutionize transportation into near space, by routinizing it. It will take the astronomical costs out of astronautics. In short, it will go a long way toward delivering the rich benefits of practical space utilization and the valuable spinoffs from space efforts into the daily lives of Americans and all people.

The new year 1972 is a year of conclusion for America's current series of manned flights to the Moon. Much is expected from the two remaining Apollo missions - in fact, their scientific results should exceed the return from all the earlier flights together. Thus they will place a fitting capstone on this vastly successful undertaking. But they also bring us to an important decision point - a point of assessing what our space horizons are as Apollo ends, and of determining where we go from here.

In the scientific arena, the past decade of experience has taught us that spacecraft are an irreplaceable tool for learning about our near-Earth space environment, the Moon, and the planets, besides being an important aid to our studies of the Sun and stars. In utilizing space to meet needs on Earth, we have seen the tremendous potential of satellites for international communications and world-wide weather forecasting. We are gaining the capability to use satellites as tools in global monitoring and management of nature resources, in agricultural applications, and in pollution control. We can foresee their use in guiding airliners across the oceans and in bringing TV education to wide areas of the world.

However, all these possibilities, and countless others with direct and dramatic bearing on human betterment, can never be more than fractionally realized so long as every single trip from Earth to orbit remains a matter of special effort and staggering expense. This is why commitment to the Space Shuttle program is the right step for America to take, in moving out from our present beach-head in the sky to achieve a real working presence in space - because the Space Shuttle will give us routine access to space by sharply reducing costs in dollars and preparation time.

The new system will differ radically from all existing booster systems, in that most of this new system will be recovered and used again and again - up to 100 times. The resulting economies may bring operating costs down as low as one-tenth of those present launch vehicles.

The resulting changes in modes of flight and re-entry will make the ride safer, and less demanding for the passengers, so that men and women with work to do in space can "commute" aloft, without having to spend years in training for the skills and rigors of old-style space flight. As scientists and technicians are actually able to accompany their instruments into space, limiting boundaries between our manned and unmanned space programmes will disappear. Development of new space applications will be able to proceed much faster. Repair or servicing of satellites in space will become possible, as will delivery of valuable payloads from orbit back to Earth.

The general reliability and versatility which the Shuttle system offers seems likely to establish it quickly as the workhorse of our whole space effort, taking the place of all present launch vehicles except the very smallest and very largest.

NASA and many aerospace companies have carried out extensive design studies for the Shuttle. Congress has reviewed and approved this effort. Preparation is now sufficient for us to commence the actual work of construction with full confidence of success. In order to minimize technical and economic risks, the space agency will continue to take a cautious evolutionary approach in the development of this new system. Even so, by moving ahead at this time, we can have the Shuttle in manned flight by 1978, and operational a short time later.

It is also significant that this major new national enterprise will engage the best efforts of thousands of highly skilled workers and hundreds of contractor firms over the next several years. The amazing 'technology explosion' that has swept this country in the years since we ventured into space should remind us that robust activity in the aerospace industry is healthy for everyone - not just in jobs and income, but in the extension of our capabilities in every direction. The continued pre-eminence of America and American industry in the aerospace field will be an important part of the Shuttle's 'payload'.
Views of the Earth from space have shown us how small and fragile our home planet truly is. We are learning the imperatives of universal brotherhood and global ecology learning to think and act as guardians of one tiny blue and green island in the trackless oceans of the Universe. This new program will give more people more access to the liberating perspectives of space, even as it extends our ability to cope with physical challenges of Earth and broadens our opportunities for international cooperation in low-cost, multi-purpose space missions.

'We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it', said Oliver Wendell Holmes, 'but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor'. So with man's epic voyage into space - a voyage the United States of America has led and still shall lead.

Astronaut High Welcomes First Football Coach (Apr 1972)
Astronaut High School announced the hire of B. Mack as the new school’s first ever football coach. Mack will also teach business education at the new school.

This is the first head coaching job for the young 26 year old. Although a native of West Virginia he is familiar with Space Coast football. He served the last three years as offensive coordinater for Ft. Pierce Central High. As part of the staff he helped lead the Cobras to a state runner up finish in 1970 and to the ultimate prize en route to a 13-0 record and the 1971 4A state championship. Central’s 27-25 win over space coast powerhouse Merritt Island last year will go down in history as one of the greatest games played on the Space Coast. Mack’s offense was the third most potent on the Space Coast in the 1971 season averaging 281 yards per game.

“It’s always difficult to leave a successful program, but this is a unique opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, “said Mack. “I’m going to miss the community in Ft. Pierce but this is a great chance to build a football program from scratch. It’s going to be a great challenge but I’m up for it.”

It will be a challenge. At this point Coach Mack has no idea who will be on his squad or which players will come over from Titusville High to attend new school. Astronaut will not be able to hold spring practices and will certainly be playing catch up when practices open in August.

The level of detail, history, and immersion here is pretty mind blowing, nice work.

I appreciate that. Still struggling with how to get some stuff to show up , like the article to just be a picture rather than a thumbnail and that table looks messed up. But I've got 30 years to get it right.

season preview coming up this afternoon...

SEASON PREVIEW: ASTRONAUT WAR EAGLES
1971 Record: N/A
Projected 1972 Record: 2-8
Classification: 3-A
District: 5
Nickname: War Eagles
Colors: Maroon, Gold and White
Returning Letterman: One
Varsity Roster size: 40 (6 Seniors, 29 Juniors, 5 Sophomores)

“WAR EAGLES LEARNING TO FLY”
First year Head Coach B. Mack and first year school Astronaut are in for a rough Blastoff. Experience is non-existent and chances for winning depend on a group of youngsters.

It will be an inexperienced squad. Only one player has varsity experience, two-way lineman.

A contingent of 29 unproven juniors will be counted on to provide the War Eagles with what Coach Mack hopes to be a bright future. Junior QB will get the starting nod at quarterback. He captained the Titusville Junior Varsity to an unbeaten record in 1971. “The quarterback position is very good, “Mack said. “Both our starter and backup run and throw well.”

“This is going to be a great learning experience for these youngsters. All I can ask of them is to give their best effort each Friday night, and from the way practices have high hopes that they will come through.”

Coach Mack has said his team will dedicate this season to two young 14 year olds who tragically passed away this summer. Both would be attending Astronaut next year. “I’ve only lived in Mims a few months now but the loss of those two boys has been a great tragedy to this community. From everything I hear about them they were not only superb athletes, but good students and fine young men. A lot of our players were friends with them, and we tribute our inaugural season to their memory.”

Titusville Terriers at Astronaut War Eagles

Big Brother teaches little brother a lesson, but it wasn’t easy

Titusville’s defense came up big in the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter to defeat Astronaut, 17-6 in the inaugural showdown of what is going to be a fierce rivalry. Over 5,000 fans packed into Draa Field to witness the bitter, fiercely contested battle.

Neither team would score in the first half as both defenses dominated. Astronaut missed a golden opportunity to get points on the board in the 2[sup]nd [/sup]quarter when a Titusville defensive stand turned the ball over on downs at the Terrier 2 yard line. Backup QB Tim Herron, in for injured QB and Kicker Mark Johnson, hit fullback Scott McCallister with a pass in the flats on 4[sup]th[/sup] and goal but McCallister was stopped short by a picture perfect tackle.

Titusville hit a 35 yard FG late in the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter to take a 3-0 lead which proved to be shortlived. On the ensuing kickoff speedy Tailback David Bovain took the ball at his own 9 and raced 73 yards down the sideline before being shoved out of bounds at the Terrier 18. Rodney Dixon rushed up the gut for 6 yards and Bovain followed with a 12 yard dash to paydirt. With no kicker available Coach B. Mack chose to go for 2, but Bovain’s rush was stopped short of the goal line.

Astronaut looked like it could add to its 6-3 lead until Titusville’s defense came up with a big play of its own. As Herron dropped back to pass he was hit and fumbled at the Titusville 14. The Terriers picked up the fumble and raced 68 yards before being stopped at the AHS 18. 3 plays later the THS QB darted in from 7 yards out to give THS a 10-6 lead with 5:45 to play.

Herron’s first pass on the next possession was intercepted. The THS QB added his 2[sup]nd[/sup] touchdown of the game with 3:47 left on the clock putting the Terriers ahead 17-6, which proved to be the final score.
Astronaut head coach B. Mack was dejected at the loss. “We turned the ball over at the wrong time” said Mack. The big one had slipped away.

Wymore Tech at Astronaut
Astronaut 4[sup]th[/sup] qtr comeback nets First Win

David Bovain scored on a 28 yard jaunt with 54 seconds left to complete a comeback and give the Astronaut War Eagles their first win in school history, 12-7 over Wymore Tech. Both schools entered the game 0-2 and hungry for a victory.

One could argue it was sloppy offense or good defense that ended the first half in a scoreless stalemate.

The zero’s remained on the scoreboard for most of the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter as well. Wymore got on the board with a 19 yard
TD pass with 40 seconds left in the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter.

Finally, the War Eagle offense got going late in the game. Bovain scored his first TD from 13 yards out with 4 minutes left. Astronaut Coach B. Mack then elected to go for 2. “I felt like with the game clock where it was we may not get the ball back, “ said Mack. “We are so hungry for a win that a tie wouldn’t satisfy, plus our kicking game has been shaky.” The decision didn’t work out as QB Mark Johnson’s rush attempt was thwarted short of the goal line.

The AHS defense forced a 3 and out on Wymore’s next possession and got the ball back with 2:39 on their own 46 yard line. A Mark Johnson 11 yard completion on 1[sup]st[/sup] down ensued, and then the David Bovain show began. The Junior ball carrier, who is becoming the go to guy for the War Eagle offense, picked up 5 yards on the next play. Another 9 yard run moved the chains and the ball down to the Wymore 28. On the next play Bovain took a handoff and ran off tackle behind the blocking of Bob Earnest. Once in the secondary he turned on his rocket engines and out raced all defenders to the end zone for the decisive score. He has scored all 24 War Eagle points this young season.

Mack was elated with the outcome, “This is a great feeling for these kids who have worked their tails off. Hopefully this is the first of many.”

Wymore game stats

REEL TALK: This is the first divergence for an actual game result. The reel game ended in a 6-6 tie, the War Eagles still waiting for that first victory. Ties would be eliminated from Florida High School football in the coming years, first with the "penetration rule" then with the Kansas Tie-breaker.

Astronaut at Cocoa Beach Minutemen

Eagles Can’t Kick Losing Habit
Cocoa Beach improved to 3-1 on the season with a 27-26 win over Astronaut (1-3) Friday night at Minutemen Stadium. The Minutemen kicked past the Eagles, the difference in the game being kicks on conversion attempts. Cocoa Beach made all of their PAT’s and added two Field goals. The first year War Eagles connected on only 2 of 4 PAT's. The shaky AHS kicking game also played into a decision by Head Coach B. Mack to pass up a chance at a game winning field goal.

With 1:09 left and the War Eagles at the CBHS 8 yard line facing a fourth and one Mack decided to go for the first down. “I felt we could get a yard and then have 4 plays to punch it in. I didn’t want to take a chance on a 25 yard field goal because we had missed the two extra points earlier.” The decision turned out to be the wrong one as David Bovain was stuffed at the line of scrimmage, turning the ball over and effectively ending the game.

The game was the best offensive performance to date for the Eagles, but also the worst defensive performance. The War Eagles rolled up 408 yards of offense as Mark Johnson completed 12 of 22 pass attempts for 165 yards and 3 scores. All three TD passes were to Junior Tight End Mark Allison in the first half. Allison had 7 receptions for 96 yards.

Cocoa Beach game stats.

Boned the helmet image in the game article. Oh well. not very good at this.

REEL TALK: The game was actually decided by the missed kicks. CB won 20-19. They missed on XP and AHS 2. A theme in a few key losses for the War Eagles over the years. With that said I'm quite pleased the way the simulation is playing out.

Astronaut at Rockledge Raiders
Late TD lifts Rockledge, 24-20

Rockledge scored a TD with 29 seconds left to defeat Astronaut 24-20 at McLarty Stadium. The heartbreaking loss dropped the War Eagles to 1-4 on the season.

Rockledge led 17-6 going into the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter but two AHS td drives put the War Eagles up 20-17. Rockledge late minute heroics came on a 24 yard TD pass.

Astronaut QB Mark Johnson threw for 210 yards.
