WAR EAGLES SHUT OUT MINUTEMEN

Astronaut won a defensive minded contest 9-0 over Cocoa Beach Friday night. It was the first district game for both teams. Astronaut (2-0) gained 179 yards while limited Cocoa Beach to 104 yards. The War Eagles have yet to give up a point this year.

After a first quarter interception, and turning the ball over on downs in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter, Astronaut finally got some offense going late in the half. Clark Cook intercepted a Minuteman pass and returned it to the 37 yard line with 38 seconds left. Astronaut quarterback Keith Mack then found tight end Jeff Boyd for a 20 yard pass. After a 4 yard run Astronaut called timeout. Then Mack connected with sophomore Hubert Williams for a 13 yard scoring play with just 8 seconds left. The extra point went wide and the War Eagles led 6-0 at half.

Neither team could put up much of an offensive threat in the second half. Astronaut managed a 22 yard field goal from Roy DeYoung with 6:03 left in the game to finish off the 9-0 win.

“Defense was terrific,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “I think we took a step back offensively. We’ll have to work on that with Seabreeze coming up.” Astronaut hosts unbeaten Daytona Beach Seabreeze next week.

ASTRONAUT SQUEEZES PAST SEABREEZE

The Astronaut War Eagles moved to 3-0 on the season with a hard fought 14-9 victory over previously unbeaten Daytona Seabreeze (2-1). Astronaut has now won 28 consecutive regular season games.

With 3:47 to go in the first quarter, the Sandcrabs took the lead on a field goal. With 1:09 left in the half, Astronaut quarterback Keith Mack completed a 30 yard pass to sophomore flanker Hubert Williams which set up the War Eagles at the Seabreeze 10. Two rushing attempts moved the ball to the 7 yard line. Then, Junior tailback Joe Britt lined up at wide receiver and caught a 7 yard touchdown pass as Mack rolled to his right and found Britt crossing along the back of the end zone. The extra point gave the War Eagles a 7-3 halftime lead.

Britt who struggled in the running game with only 32 yards on 14 carries, made his impact felt on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker Dwain Rutherford hit the Seabreeze quarterback as he attempted a pitch on an option play. The ball flew backwards and rolled to the 4 yard line where Britt sped in and scooped the ball and took it into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night. Astronaut led 14-3 with 1:35 remaining in the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter.

Rutherford made another big defensive play in the fourth quarter. With 7:52 to play and Seabreeze facing 4[sup]th[/sup] and 7 on the Astronaut 15, he intercepted a pass ending the scoring threat. Seabreeze finally scored a touchdown with 50 seconds left. A two point conversion attempt was no good. Astronaut covered the ensuing onside kick and ran the clock out.

“This a big win for us. That’s a really good team over there and these young guys gutted this one out,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

Clark Cook threw two 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter interceptions. The first set up Sea Breeze on the Astronaut 23 which led to a field goal. The 2[sup]nd[/sup] was after he had completed 4 straight passes to move to the Sea breeze 31. Astronaut gained only 148 yards, 47 rushing and 101 passing. MACK LIFTS WAR EAGLES OVER RAIDERS

Matthew Mack threw for a career best 201 yards to lead the Astronaut War Eagles to a 21-7 win over the Rockledge Raiders at Draa field Friday night. The Senior quarterback threw 2 touchdown passes in the key district win. Astroanaut is now 4-0 and 2-0 in district play. Rockledge is now 2-2 and 1-1 in the district. Astronaut extended its regular season winning streak to 29 games, 3 short of the school record set in the mid 1970’s.

After a scoreless 1[sup]st[/sup] quarter, Astronaut’s linebacker tandem of Leroy Berry and Wilber Rodwell came up with a big play. With 7:56 left in the half Berry hit the Rockledge ball carrier jarring the ball loose. Rodwell flew in to cover the fumble at the Rockledge 38. 8 plays later, Mack hit Joe Britt for a 7 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed and Astronaut took the 6-0 lead into halftime.

Mack put on a passing clinic in the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter. First, he hit fullback Ken Watson on a 68 yard pass play. Watson leaked out of the backfield on a route down the sideline and after catching a long pass ran another 20 plus yards before being taken down. “Ken is a good pass receiver, he played tight end most of the time as he moved up the ranks with us,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. On the next play Keith Mack found wingback Johnny Brown for a 17 yard touchdown pass with 6:38 remaining. He then executed a play fake and rolled to loft the ball to Watson in the end zone for the 2 point conversion and a 14-0 lead. Watson caught 4 passes for 73 yards to go along with 8 rushes for 32 yards.

Joe Britt added a 3 yard touchdown run with 7:56 remaining to push the lead to 21-0. Rockledge scored with 3:54 remaining on a 6 yard option pitch play.

WAR EAGLES COME UP SHORT AGAINST SATELLITE

The Satellite Beach Scorpions ended the Astronaut War Eagles 29 game regular season winning streak with a goal line stand in the final seconds Monday night at Draa Field. Astronaut is now 4-1 this year while Satellite moves to 5-0 after winning the battle of unbeaten 21-17.

Satellite struck first with a 75 yard touchdown pass with 8:49 left in the 1[sup]st[/sup] quarter. Astronaut responded late in the first half when quarterback Keith Mack found tight end Derrick George for a 51 yard catch and run to tie the game at 7. George, who is filling in for injured tight end Jeff Boyd, scored with 3:16 remaining in the half. 2 minutes later Clark Cook intercepted a Satellite pass and returned it 46 yards to the Satellite 33. Astronaut drove to the 3 yard line. Roy DeYoung kicked a 20 yard field goal as time expired. Astronaut did an excellent job of rushing its kicking team on and getting off the kick with no timeouts and the clock running.

The third quarter saw a back and forth of turnovers. Mack threw an interception giving the Scorpions the ball at the War Eagle 26 with 7:36 remaining. The good field position was squandered, however, when Senior Jim Speake returned the interception favor in the end zone to thwart the scoring threat. Mack then threw his 2[sup]nd[/sup] interception giving Satellite the ball at midfield with 3:20 remaining. That’s when Joe Britt made his impact felt. Struggling the run the ball from his tailback position, the junior picked off a pass and returned it 39 yards to the Satellite 8 yard line. Two rushing attempts lost 5 yards and the War Eagles were faced with 3[sup]rd[/sup] and goal from the 13. Mack rolled right and found sophomore Johnny Brown in the end zone for a touchdown pass and a 17-7 War Eagle lead.

The War Eagles held the line for most of the 4[sup]th[/sup] quarter, but with 1:58 Satellite connected on a 52 yard touchdown pass to draw to within 17-14. Satellite then attempted an onside kick and recovered the ball after the War Eagles couldn’t get a handle on it. The passing game of Satellite, which picked up 307 yards for the game, went back to work and a long pass set them up with first and goal with 1:12 left. With 48 seconds remaining Satellite connected on a 4 yard touchdown pass to take a 21-17 lead in front of stunned War Eagle sideline and crowd.

Joe Britt would attempt to give the War Eagles one last miracle. He took the kickoff at his own 1 yard line and returned it 83 yards to the Satellite 16 before being dragged down. “Joe kind of just ran out gas there. He was too fatigued and couldn’t come back in after that,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “He ran the ball and caught a bunch of passes on offense and played every down at cornerback. And they threw the ball all over the place tonight. He poured everything he had into this game.”

The War Eagles were left with 37 seconds to traverse the 16 yards to maintain their winning streak. Keith Mack connected on a 12 yard pass to Greg Hovis to move the ball to the Scorpion 4 yard line with 27 seconds left. After two passes were thrown out of the end zone when he couldn’t find an open man, Mack was left with 17 seconds and 3[sup]rd[/sup] down and goal. He dropped back and found Ken Watson at the goal line but the ball was jarred loose as Watson was hit. Astronaut was now left with 4[sup]th[/sup] and goal from the 4 and 12 seconds remaining. Coach Mack called his final timeout to go over things with his offense.

On the 4[sup]th[/sup] down play Keith Mack hit Clark Cook on a slant pattern but Cook was tackled as soon as he caught the ball on the 1 and half yard line. The War Eagles came up just short of a thrilling win. “Keith threw the ball a little too early there, but who knows if it’s even complete if he waits another half second,” said Coach Mack. “The silver lining is that this wasn’t a district game so we still have that to play for.”

ASTRONAUT GETS TOUGH WIN OVER LEESBURG

Astronaut bounced back from their first loss of the season to grind out a tough 14-7 district win over Leesburg Friday night at Draa Field. Astronaut moves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play. The loss eliminated Leesburg (2-4, 0-3 in district) from contention for the district title.

Both defense played well on the night and after a scoreless first quarter, Astronaut took a 7-0 lead with a long drive just before halftime. The War Eagles drove 65 yards in 12 plays consuming 7 minutes of game time. Jeff Boyd, returning from injury after missing 2 games, caught a 13 yard touchdown pass from Keith Mack. Mack completed a 20 yard strike to Joe Bitt to move the War Eagles to the 13 on the prior play. The score came with 33 seconds remaining in the half.

Leesburg struck midway through the 3[sup]rd[/sup] quarter. They tied the game on a 50 yard touchdown pass with 6:04 remaining. The War Eagles began a march at the beginning of the fourth quarter, which culminated in Greg Hovis scoring from 4 yards out which proved to be the game winning score with 7:30 remaining in the game.

On the next drive, Leesburg drove to the Astronaut 34 where they faced a 4[sup]th[/sup] down. They couldn’t extend the drive as the pass attempt was dropped by a receiver.

“District wins are big wins. We still are in control but have tough tests ahead.. Again our defense played really well,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack.

This was a rain soaked, sloppy game. Neither team completed a pass, Leesburg going 0 for 5 and Astronaut 0 for 2. Leesburg fumbled seven times, losing 3. Astronaut fumbled 9 times, losing 6. Both teams scored touchdowns in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter. Leesburg on a 1 yard run. Astronaut answered with a 37 yard run by fullback Ken Watson. The game went scoreless the rest of the way and the Kansas tiebreaker overtime came into play. Leesburg failed to score on four downs, going for a touchdown on 4th down rather than a field goal. The Leesburg coach felt he had no choice because if Astronaut scored a touchdown the game was over. Well, Astronaut Coach Jay Donnelly didn’t even run a play. He sent out his kicker on first down and Roy DeYoung nailed the 27 yarder to end the game with a 10-7 win. His reasoning was with the sloppy wet conditions and losing so many fumbles already, it wasn’t worth the risk to try to get closer.

Astronaut vs. Titusville

WAR EAGLES ESCAPE TERRIERS

Astronaut won the annual clash with crosstown rival Titusville 14-7 Friday night at Draa Field. Although the War Eagles outgained the Terriers 279 to 135 the game the game was in doubt until the very end.

Astronaut scored on a 1 yard run by fullback Ken Watson with 4:21 left in the first quarter. The War Eagles drive went 64 yards in 12 plays. A few minutes later, Hubert Williams returned a Titusville punt 25 yards to the Terrier 35. Watson scored his second touchdown on a 27 yard rumble on 4[sup]th[/sup] and 2 to give the War Eagles a 14-0 lead with 10 seconds left in the quarter. He rushed for a game high 73 yards on 15 carries. War Eagle tailback Joe Britt left the game with a concussion in the first quarter after gaining 46 yards on 5 carries. He did not return but is expected to play next week.

The rest of the game saw the defenses control. With 1:23 left in the third quarter Titusville scored on a 4 yard touchdown run. The drive went 60 yards in 9 plays.

Late in the fourth quarter the War Eagles took possession with 4 minutes remaining. The hard running of Greg Hovis and Watson picked up 4 first downs to run out the clock. “This was a tough game as always,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “We’re happy to keep the Hudson trophy another year.”

ASTRONAUT OVER ST. CLOUD

ST. CLOUD—Astronaut picked up a 31-12 win over the St. Cloud Bulldogs Friday night to move to within a game of a school record 4[sup]th[/sup] consecutive district championship. The War Eagles are now 7-1 on the season with a 4-0 district record. St. Cloud falls to 1-3 in district play.

In the first quarter, Astronaut Joe Britt intercepted a St. Cloud pass with 8:42 remaining to set the War Eagles up at their own 48. A 9 play drive ended with quarterback Keith Mack finding Clark Cook in the back corner of the end zone with 5:08 remaining for a 7-0 lead. On St. Cloud’s next possession, Ken Watson recovered a Bulldog fumble at the 19 yard line giving the War Eagles prime field position. Britt ran 15 yards and then Watson carried into the end zone for a 4 yard touchdown run.

Roy DeYoung booted a 23 yard field goal with 8:06 left in the half to give Astronaut a 17-0 lead. Later in the half, Keith Mack and Hubert Williams connected on a 71 yard pass play. Williams caught the pass 20 yards downfield and then ran the rest of the way before being pushed out of bounds at the St. Cloud 7. On the next play Mack connected with Johnny Brown for a touchdown pass with 59 seconds left. Astronaut held a 24-0 lead at halftime.

St. Cloud finally got on the board with an 11 yard touchdown pass with 6:55 left in the third quarter. On the two point try the quarterback was sacked leaving the score at a 24 to 6 advantage for Astronaut. The Bulldogs scored again with 3:59 left in the fourth quarter on a 2 yard touchdown pass. The 2 point conversion failed as Astronaut knocked away the pass attempt.

After an onside kick attempt failed, the War Eagles drove down the field with Greg Hovis scoring on a 6 yard run with 15 seconds remaining to close the score out at 31-12.

“Good win tonight. We’ve got a week off then we play Orlando Jones for the district championship,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “I think this young group has overachieved this year and to be in that position speaks well to their efforts.”

BRITT LEADS WAR EAGLES TO DISTRICT TITLE

The Astronaut War Eagles won their fourth consecutive district championship with a 28-7 win over Orlando Jones Thursday night at Draa Field. Joe Britt was a force on offense for the War Eagles and Jones could only muster 127 yards of their own. Britt carried a career high 20 times for 140 yards and a touchdown. He also caught 2 passes for 89 yard and a touchdown.

Astronaut (8-1, 5-0) got on the board first in the opening quarter when fullback Ken Watson scored on a 14 yard run with 6:07 left. The key play on the drive was a 29 yard dash by Britt. Jones responded with a drive and 12 yard touchdown pass with 1:34 left in the quarter

In the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter, Watson had a 29 yard run of his own down to the Jones 4 yard line. This time, it was Britt who carried into the end zone from 4 yards away to put the War Eagles up 14-7. Astronaut drove to the 1 yard line late in the half, aided by a 30 yard run from Britt. With 26 seconds left Jones intercepted a Keith Mack pass in the end zone to end the scoring threat.

“You can put that one on me,” said Astronaut Coach B. Mack. “I didn’t manage the clock very well at the end of the half and after our last timeout called for the pass play. I didn’t think we’d be able to get a score if they stopped us on a run. We didn’t score either way. I’ll take the balame.”

Keith Mack would get his touchdown pass in the third quarter. He connected with Britt 30 yards downfield. After the catch Britt, a junior halfback, shook off his defenders tackle and was all by himself to race the final 40 yards for a 70 yard touchdown play. The War Eagles held a 21-7 lead with 5:07 remaining in the quarter.

Britt continued his big play night in the fourth quarter. He bounced off a Jones tackled and raced 26 yards before being caught by the pursuit angle of Jones defensive back and shoved out of bounds at the 1 yard line. Watson bulled in from there for his second touchdown of the night with 6:39 left. Watson finished with 79 yards on 10 rushes. The War Eagles rushed for 251 yards on the night.

“I’m happy for these youngsters,” said B. Mack. “That’s a good Jones team (previously undefeated in district play) and we weren’t predicted to win district after all the seniors we lost last year.”

ASTRONAUT SHUTS OUT EAU GALLIE

Eau Gallie (5-5) could only gain 67 yards and 3 first downs as the Astronaut War Eagle defense finished off the regular season with a shutout of the Commodores. Astronaut finishes the regular season at 9-1 and will host Bartow next week in the first round of the playoffs.

After a scoreless first quarter, Roy DeYoung gave Astronaut a 3-0 lead with a 28 yard field goal with 5:43 left in the half. At the end of the half, the War Eagles couldn’t get the field goal team on in time after Senior Quarterback Keith Mack was sacked.

REEL TALK:

Despite the downtroddenness of Eau Gallie football, this was a historically good year for them. They actually finished 6-4, because they beat Astronaut in reel life, 17-14. Eau Gallie kicked a 27 yard field goal with 16 seconds left to get the win. Astronaut finishes the regular season 7-3, having already wrapped up a playoff berth maybe they were looking ahead.

On the Monday after this game it was announced that Satellite must forfeit its wins for the season for using an ineligible player. This meant that Astronaut was officially 8-2 for the season. And it means that in the dynasty, officially 10-0. The regular season win streak is still intact and stands at 35 games. I’m not sure if that’s how it would officially go, but it is in my dream world.

The more interesting result of the Satellite forfeits is what it did to their district race. The district was as follows:

Melbourne 3-1
Satellite 3-1
Palm Bay 2-2
Eau Gallie 2-2
Cocoa 0-4

Melbourne won the head to head with Satellite and on Friday night after the regular season is over they are the district champs. Yet they wake up Monday morning and Satellite has now forfeited their wins against Palm Bay and Eau Gallie, making both of those teams 3-1. Since the 3 teams at 3-1 all beat each other in some circular fashion they would need to have a Kansas tiebreaker playoff to decide the district champion. Melbourne won the mini-playoff, and went onto the state playoffs.

WAR EAGLES FALL IN DOUBLE OVERTIME, 43-41

Astronaut’s season came to an end Friday night Draa Field when a two point conversion pass to tie the game was intercepted in a second overtime. The War Eagles (10-1) lost to the Bartow Yellow Jackets 43-41.

In the first quarter, Astronaut Senior Quarterback Keith Mack rolled out after a play fake and connected on a 6 yard touchdown pass with fullback Ken Watson to take a 7-0 lead. The play capped a 10 play 56 yard drive. After forcing a Bartow punt junior tailback Joe Britt took a toss on a power sweep out of the wishbone formation and went 66 yards for a touchdown. The War Eagles took a 14-0 lead into the 2[sup]nd[/sup] quarter. Britt rushed for 120 yards on 15 carries for the game to lead the War Eagles.

Bartow fought back and picked up their first touchdown on a 15 yard pass with 6:38 left in the half. They then kicked a 22 yard field goal with 2 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 14-10.

In the second half, Bartow took the lead on a 91 yard touchdown pass. “I think that may be the longest touchdown we’ve ever given up,” said a dejected coach B. Mack after the game. Another Bartow field goal make it 20-14 with 1:35 left in the third quarter.

On the next drive the War Eagles began a march to make a comeback. The drive started at their own 25 yard line and featured a series of 3[sup]rd[/sup] down conversions. First on a 3[sup]rd[/sup] and 5, Keith Mack scrambled for a 13 yard gain to set the ball up at midfield. Later in the drive, Mack connected with Clark Cook for a 13 yard pass to convert a 3[sup]rd[/sup] and 8 at the Bartow 23 yard line. The next play was an incomplete pass. Then Mack, hit fullback Greg Hovis for 7 yards to the 16. Mack then picked up the 3[sup]rd[/sup] and 3 by getting just enough on a run. Set up at the Bartow 13 two rushing plays netted just 2 yards. Then on 3[sup]rd[/sup] and 8 Mack threw incomplete. The War Eagles needed to convert on 4[sup]th[/sup] down. Rolling to his right Mack found Johnny Brown in the back of the end zone for a touchdown pass. Roy DeYoung kicked the extra point to give the War Eagles a 21-20 lead. The drive went 75 yards in 18 plays and took 8 minutes and 54 seconds off the game clock.

Bartow was left with 4:41 to play to try to get the lead back. It only took them a minute and a half to do so. A series of passes quickly moved to the War Eagle 26 yard line. Then Bartow got a 26 yard scoring pass to take the lead. A two point conversion attempt was successful and gave the Yellow Jackets a 28-21 lead with 3:11 left. Mack lead the War Eagles back down the field and with 6 seconds left connected with Hubert Williams for a 16 yard touchdown pass. Roy DeYoung’s extra point tied the game at 28.

“That was a tremendous fourth quarter, both team showed a great deal of heart,” said Coach Mack.

In the first overtime, Astronaut was on offense first. Rushes by fullbacks Ken Watson and Greg Hovis moved the ball to the 3. That is where Keith Mack found Jeff Boyd for a 3 yard touchdown pass to take the lead. DeYoung added the extra point to make it 35-28. In Bartow’s half of the first overtime, a first down rush yielded two yards. Then on second down the Yellow Jackets scored on an 8 yard run. The extra point was good and the game was tied at 35, heading for a 2[sup]nd[/sup] overtime.

Bartow with the ball first, picked up 9 yards on a first down rush. They then bulled in for a 1 yard touchdown. It was at this point that the Bartow coach made the decision of the game. Rather than kicking an extra point, he gambled and chose to go for a two point conversion. The conversion was good on a power running play and Bartow held to a 43-35 advantage.

It was now up the War Eagles to score a touchdown and get a two point conversion to continue the game. Keith Mack took off for a nine yard run on first down. Then he snuck in for a 1 yard touchdown. For the two point conversion, Astronaut chose to attempt a pass play, Mack was pressured heavily and through a desperation pass toward the goal line which was picked off by Bartow, ending the game.

Mack accounted for 5 War Eagle touchdowns. He passed for 4 touchdowns as well as the overtime rushing score. The Auburn commit, in the final game of his high school career completed 15 of 21 passes for 193 yards.

REEL TALK:

This was a 27-7 loss for Astronaut. Bartow rushed for 290 yards and dominated the game. Bartow went on to beat Clewiston 10-6 and then won the State championship against Bradford County 28-20. This was only 3 game to win the state championship in 1985. This was due to the realignment and expansion of classifications. While the 4A and 5A classes had 16 districts and thus 4 games to win the state championship, Class 3A, 2A, and A only had 8 districts.

In the dynasty re-enactment, I played 3 overtimes. When I play an overtime game I take control of each team on their offensive series until I get them to a first and goal at the ten, since the college game starts OT at the 25. It’s always worked well until this time. For some reason I had to make it so both teams didn’t score in the 2[sup]nd[/sup] overtime. I think while trying to get my opponent to the 10 I had them turn the ball over on downs. This would have allowed me to play with Astronaut and get a seemingly rigged win. Therefore, I made Astronaut just punt on its overtime. I think I then did the same thing on the 3[sup]rd[/sup] overtime to get the “who goes first on offense” part of it right for what I was considering my 2[sup]nd[/sup] overtime. And then it played out as I wrote up. The requirement of the two point conversion after the 2[sup]nd[/sup] overtime in the college game really was the difference here. Otherwise I would have kicked the extra point and gone onto another overtime.

In October 1985 Space Shuttle Atlantis completed its maiden voyage.

The War Eagles finish the 1985 season 10-1. A heartbreaking overtime exit in the first round of the playoffs dashed title hopes.

We are reminded that we built this city on the strength of a starship.
