Who exactly did they leave out? Carrick and Barry aren't youngsters. Barkley, Shaw, Sterling are all in the squad.

Phil Jagielka is no spring chicken, coudlve taken John Stones I guess.

Take out Gerrard and Lampard and the youth is reasonably well catered for. But there is a lot of young English player who still feature heavily at U21 but would probably could have featured.

Well, in 2010 the youngest guy was 23 (Hart and someone else I forget), so to take an 18 year old is a big improvement. I don't think taking the two big players in Lamps and Gerrard is a problem, some experience is necessary. I could buy Stones for Jagielka, otherwise the youngsters that are good enough are there for the most part. I mean you could maybe say Clyne for Glen Johnson? Is there anyone from the U21s I'm missing that's playing at a high enough level of talent atm?

Yeh I guess you could make an argument for Clyne.

And talking about Englands U21 players is a touchy subject and I feel like anything I say ill get some stick for it, because there are definitely players out there who could be playing at a higher level but they just arent (largely due to the huge influx of foreign players in the prem, good and bad) Without getting too sidetracked their are benches full of average foreign players because lower down clubs cant afford to own/keep hold off young english players so either they end up on the benches of top teams and not playing (see Jack Rodwell) or they end up on loan at Championship teams and never get to develop (see Ravel Morrison)

But players who could have been called up, and bare with me on this as theyre not all U21s:

Fabian Delph
Danny Rose
Tom Ince
Nathan Redmond
Jesse Lingard
Danny Ings (this guy has world class written all over him, one to watch for next year)
Nathaniel Chalobah
Michael Keane

All playing rotation or championship level but each one could probably play regular rolls in the Premiership and would probably flourish if they did.

Now im not saying they should have been called up for the WC, but with a bit of hindsight they couldve all been capped for England in friendlies by now and being sat behind a slighter older player in the rotation.

I won't give you stick for something I know less than you about. I'll stick to giving stick about the US team, haha.

All those guys are fairly solid. Feel like Ince and Ings are going to be shining pretty soon. But right now it feels like Soton and the big clubs are the only ones where young English players get any credit in terms of international callups. There should definitely be more rotation, though that being said I think this squad is a pretty good step in that direction, and most importantly it does include some of the best youngsters (Shaw, Sterling, Barkley, Ox) even if they're already 'established'.

City are pretty bad with English talent, admittedly. We'll pay the system back eventually, but even right now all of the good youngsters in the pipeline are foreign. (By that I mean the U21s that I'm aware of). I do wish Rodwell got more playing time, but injuries got to him. Sinclair should've never been bought probably.

Carvalho is going to rape us if Bento actually starts him, but Bento would rather start Raul "Yellow Card" Meireles and Miguel Veloso who is like 40

Haha oh right. Still seems redundant. Honestly I would be in favor of taking two keepers to the WC.

The rules require teams to bring 3 goalies. I don't know if there's a rule against designating an outfield player as a "goalie," but I'm guessing that wouldn't fly.

Tevez doesn't make the provisional squad but Franco Di Santo who just recently played for Wigan does.

France looks strong, but no Nasri....Deschamps and him had a falling out apparently.

I think a bet on Argentina would be a good move.

Actually fuck that theyre second favorites.

Yeah Tevez not making the Argentina was a guarantee to happen no matter how well he played this year. Also did I double take when I saw Lisandro Lopez in defense for Argentina. Gonna assume it's not the former Lyon striker.

Has Holland been posted yet?

  • Goalkeepers: Jasper Cillessen (Ajax), Tim Krul (Newcastle), Jeroen Zoet (PSV Eindhoven), Michel Vorm (Swansea)
  • Defenders: Patrick van Aanholt (Vitesse), Daley Blind (Ajax), Daryl Janmaat (Feyenoord), Terence Kongolo (Feyenoord), Bruno Martins Indi (Feyenoord), Karim Rekik (PSV Eindhoven), Joel Veltman (Ajax), Paul Verhaegh (Augsburg), Ron Vlaar (Aston Villa), Stefan de Vrij (Feyenoord)
  • Midfielders: Jordy Clasie (Feyenoord), Leroy Fer (Norwich), Jonathan de Guzman (Swansea), Nigel de Jong (AC Milan), Wesley Sneijder (Galatasaray), Tonny Vilhena (Feyenoord), Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburg), Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV Eindhoven)
  • Forwards: Jean-Paul Boetius (Feyenoord), Memphis Depay (PSV Eindhoven), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Schalke), Dirk Kuyt (Fenerbahce), Jeremain Lens (Dynamo Kiev), Robin van Persie (Manchester United), Quincy Promes (FC Twente), Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich).
Defense seems underwhelming to me, but the midfield and attack looks pretty good.

Torn on the Nasri omission. He's France's fourth or fifth best player, but seems like a total head case. Deschamps even outright said he didn't take him because he pouts when he's not selected to start.

After 2010, I can't blame him for being gun shy. Although that doesn't explain why Evra and Ribery made it (leaving off even an out of form Ribery probably would have caused riots, I guess).

Surprised Caballero (Malaga) doesn't make the Argentina team, but Orion does.

Romero isn't Monaco's starter anymore either.

Argentina's fans are ripping Sabella for it. I think like half the roster are guys he formerly coached at Estudiantes. Speroni should have a spot on that team as well. I understand Tevez because he is terrible for morale.

Would like to see Sosa and Martin make it. Sosa came out of nowhere but he's been playing well for Atleti. And DeMichelis, well.
