No, punt is the right call. That was the first time in about 50 punts this year he's mishandled the ball. Even if he punts it out of the endzone, that's fine. Just getting a punt off might end the game there. I don't think the throwaway by Rudock would have done that.

And, if he just falls on the ball, all MSU can do is a hail mary. It was just a ridiculous play. Something I've never seen before. You can't plan for that to happen.

There were plenty of reasons to think something may happen. Inexperienced player, long punt style, low trajectory. Throw in the long snap, which is never a guarantee (snap was a bit low) and there's reason to at least consider a throwaway.

Easy in hindsight to say all this... punt was the right call but that throwaway sounds nice right now.
