MSU and Larry Nassar

I don't know how many of you are following the Larry Nassar situation, which is terrible and disgusting. He was a doctor for MSU and US Gymnastics and used that position to sexual abuse gymnasts and MSU athletes.

What really bugs me about this is Michigan State's role in all of this. We've rightfully pilloried PSU for their role in Sandusky, but the outrage on MSU is not really there, outside of some people in Michigan.

Long story short, MSU claims it didn't know about Nasser's abuse until 2016. However, 14 different people at MSU were told about his abuse over 20 years. And they did basically nothing: http://www.detroitnews.com/story/te...sident-told-nassar-complaint-2014/1042071001/

It's disgusting, and I really hope these MSU people end up in jail along with Nasser. But MSU seems content to try to sweep this under the rug.

Yeah, watched some of the testimonies. It's disgusting. He should be buried alive and anyone who they can prove responsible for keeping him in this position should rot in prison.

Check out this e-mail in 2016 from MSU's President, too:

According to that story I linked, she was told about Nassar's abuse in 2014.

My wife has turned me into a full on USA Gymnastics and USA Figure Skating fan over the past decade and a half we've been together so I've been following this really closely and have been absolutely disgusted at how this whole thing has played out. This is worse than what happened with the State Penn Pedos and could have and should have been avoided had someone, anyone, not fallen down on the job. When I saw Nasser begging for mercy from the court tom bout "praying the rosary daily for forgiveness" all I could think about was my main man Johnny Weir and queen bad ass Alicia Sacramone running over that sack of monkey dung with a steamroller.

Just an absolute disgrace that this animal was allowed to get away with this for so long because no one wanted to intervene. Let them all burn.

A-1 From Day 1

What a tremendous sack of shit. He can't die soon enough.

Larry Nassar complains it’s too hard to listen to victim stories

Former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, accused of sexually abusing more than 140 girls and women, picked a fight with the judge overseeing his marathon sentencing hearing.
He lost.

In a six-page single-spaced letter, Nassar complained it was too hard for him to listen to dozens of accusers describe how he abused them under the guise of medical treatments and how it wrecked their lives. He said the judge had turned the proceeding into a "media circus" and put herself in the spotlight.

"Now this is entertaining to me," County Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said as she read from the letter in court on Thursday.

"Aquilina said if I pass out she'll have the EMTs revive me and prop me up in the witness box."
The judge scoffed.

"I suspect you have watched too much television," Aquilina said. "It's delusional. You need to talk about these issues with a therapist and that's not me."

Nassar, 54, the former team doctor for the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, has pleaded guilty in Ingham County to molesting seven girls.

His agreement allows for victim impact statements, and Aquilina is letting all of the accusers give one; more than 100 have signed up to appear in the courtroom or have statements read aloud.

They stand at a podium, often sobbing as they speak, often directly to the defendant. Nassar, wearing blue jail clothing and a hangdog expression, mostly keeps his head and eyes down and sometimes shakes or weeps.

After each statement, Aquilina consoles and applauds the accuser, heaping scorn on Nassar in the process. She's already said she will impose a sentence that ensures he dies in jail.

"The next judge he faces will be God," she told one woman on Wednesday.

“It's delusional. You need to talk about these issues with a therapist and that's not me.”

On Thursday, Nassar quietly as Aquilina read out parts of his letter to the court, starting with his complaint about the media coverage.
"I didn't ask any media to be here," she said.

Then she turned to an excerpt where Nassar seemed to be upset that more women than the seven in his plea deal were being given their day in court.

"Aquilina is allowing them all to talk," he wrote. "She wants me to sit in the witness box next to her for all four days so the media cameras will be directed at her."
The judge sounded incredulous as she read the words aloud, saying she didn't need the face time.

"I don't have a dog in this fight, sir," she said, adding, "I didn't want even one victim to lose their voice."

"Spending four or five days listening to them is significantly minor considering the hours of pleasure you had at their expense and ruining their lives," she said.

Nassar said in the letter that he passed out twice before his federal sentencing on child pornography charges, which got him 60 years in prison.

"I'm sorry about that, sir. I wish you well," Aquilina said.

She said she had cut Wednesday's court session short to allow Nassar to meet with mental health services. She asked if they had recommended any accommodations for him, and he said meekly they had not.

Nassar will be sentenced at the conclusion of the hearing, which could go into next week. Five more women have just requested time to speak, bringing the total to 105, prosecutors said.

He basically fingered a bunch of athletes - not just gymnasts - under the guise of medical treatment. I think they were both underage and of age. A bunch being hundreds.

Oh man. Yeah just kill him and all the people who covered it up need to be outed and never work in any position of authority again. They obviously can't handle it.

This isn't some bullshit "you violated my 'safe space' by being a man within 10' of me" SJW nonsense, this is legit predatory grooming of victims for years and then using his position and trust to abuse them sexually.

The only recommendation for this guy is a meeting of his windpipe with a 12 ga blast.

Nah. Too quick. I think more along the lines of:

. . . I know this is all internetz tough talk. But seriously, what happened with Nassar is disgusting on so many levels. Many of those levels are articulated by other people in this thread. As a society, we should all be ashamed.

I’m sure it’s just coincidence that the sustained heterosexual sexual abuse of minors is seen as less newsworthy than the sustained homosexual sexual abuse of minors

“The meeting we had the other day was five hours. And talking Lou Anna was 10 minutes. We unanimously decided in that meeting right away that Lou Anna was going to, that we were going to support her staying as president. There’s so many more things going on at the university than just this Nassar thing. When you go to the basketball game, you walk into the new Breslin, and the person who hustled and got all those major donors to give money was Lou Anna Simon. There’s just so many things that make up being president at a university that keeps everything moving and everything right with the deans, everything at a school where we have a waiting list of people, of students who want to come.”

What should be done about the USOC and USA Gymnastics? I think there is an argument to be made that US Gymnastics should not, among other possible punishments, be allowed to compete in the Olympics for a couple of games. Is that unfortunate for the atholetes, sure. But, it's possible that a lot of this crap was allowed to go on in pursuit of athletic achievement (which is nuts when you put it in perspective). Therefore, they should now not be allowed to pursue such athletic achievements.

USA Gymnastics considered disbanding and multiple people in charge there have resigned. They didn't disband because apparently that would hurt local gymnastics clubs because USA Gymnastics gives them financial support or something. A lot of fixes needed there, but they're ahead of MSU at least.

The difference between MSU and PSU is no one in the MSU community is out in front of the campus holding a candle light vigil and crying to a supposed hero. We also won't be building any statues to Nassar, Klages, etc.

Heads will roll, the President is going to step down and so is the AD this week and whoever else was involved and culpable should lose their jobs. No one in the MSU community is shedding tears trying to protect these people around the community. That's the biggest difference.

Yeah, the administration has had its collective head up its ass but your point is right. The students at MSU have been the ones pushing for a lot of stuff to happen. The newspaper called for the President to resign, and they were the first people to do it. It's definitely a contrast from PSU.

Yup and the students are going to do a teal out in the Izzone for Friday's game representing the victims of sexual assault. Clearly the administration has been totally amiss, but the student body and community is really doing all it can to support the victims.

Part of the President's resignation statement:

As tragedies are politicized, blame is inevitable. As president, it is only natural that I am the focus of this anger. I understand, and that is why I have limited my personal statements. Throughout my career, I have worked very hard to put Team MSU first. Throughout my career, I have consistently and persistently spoken and worked on behalf of Team MSU. I have tried to make it not about me. I urge those who have supported my work to understand that I cannot make it about me now.

Larry Nassar being a monster aside, I'm pretty convinced at this point that the stories in that article around the football and basketball team happen at nearly every university in the country and that's sad as fuck.

Point maybe true, but the response to sexual assault allegations is completely under each university's control. MSU's response is really bad here. It might be hard to make sure 85 players are always on the straight and narrow, but you can definitely control the response.
