Fans Expect Shrewsbury to Win League

Predicted Finish: 4

Key Player: Liam Lawrence

Last Season: 9 – 15 – 22 (23rd in Football League One, Relegated to Football League Two)

Tradition and history count for a lot among the fans of Shrewsbury, but they also demand a price for their unswerving loyalty that can only be repaid by a return to Football League One after being relegated thanks to a bitterly disappointing 2013-2014 season.

Carrying the responsibility to achieve success is part of what playing for Shrewsbury Town is all about, according to club midfielder, Liam Lawrence, and he believes his teammates are equal to the challenge. “All the players here know what it means to wear this shirt,” he explained. “If they didn’t, I’m sure the fans would soon remind them. We aim to win every competition we enter and that is certainly the case with League Two.”

As a forward, James Collins faces a simple task: score goals and lots of them.

Cameron Gayle, meanwhile will have to ensure as few goals as possible are conceded, while trying to make a contribution when attacking.

There have been some notices regarding young James Caton and he is definitely one to watch out for.

For the first 39 minutes neither side could gain a clear advantage but Wimbledon's Adebayo Akinfenwa opened the scoring when he took the ricochet of his own shot off the left post past a diving Jayson Leutwiler. Shrewsbury had difficulty finding openings in the tough Dons defense throughout the first half. Just before halftime, Wimbeldon midfielder Harry Pell drew a yellow card with a badly timed tackle on Tom Lee. Andy Robinson leveled things for the Shrews on a beautiful free kick into the top left corner of the goal and the score stood at 1-1. James Wesolowski added another goal for Shrewsbury at 55' with a strong low shot to the bottom left of the goal that seemed to demoralize Wimbeldon. Tough defense from Shrewsbury fended off each new attack through the second half. At 85' Wimbledon's Alan Bennett had the misfortune to record an own goal while trying to clear a dangerous ball in the box. Final Score: Shrewsbury Town 3 - AFC Wimbledon 1.

Here is Andy Robinson's incredible free kick goal. I couldn't believe he made it.

Shrewsbury's Capital One Cup hopes came crashing down in a hard fought loss to Yeovil Town. Striker Andrew Mangan put Shrewsbury ahead at 9 minutes with a low goal on the right side of the net. For the next 65 minutes both sides had scoring opportunities but neither could push across a goal. Ajay Leitch-Smith headed in an equalizer for Yeovil at 74 minutes and here the score would stand. Shrewsbury striker Scott Vernon appeared to have broken the deadlock at 108 minutes but was ruled offside. With the scored still knotted at one goal apiece after extra time, the match was settled with penalties. Yeovil Town took the match 4-3 and will advance in the cup competition. Shrewsbury manager Mickey Mellon acknowledged that his side didn't take full advantage of their opportunities, "We had our chances but when it comes down to penalties it can go either way. I know the lads are bitterly disappointed but our side is still coming together and I'm confident we'll be in better form moving forward."

Shrewsbury Town defeated Tranmere Rovers 5-0 in a very one-sided match. Most pundits felt the result was fair given the balance of play. Scott Vernon, Andy Robinson and James Wesolowski all recorded goals but Tom Lee was named man of the match. Lee recorded two goals, including his first in League Two, and an assist in the victory. In the post match interview, Lee was clearly pleased with his first brace for Shrewsbury. "We all worked well together today, I'm settling in to this team and I'm pleased to be here."

Oluwafemi Ilesanmi's 54th-minute equalizer saved a point for York City in a 2-2 draw against Shrewsbury Town. “We are disappointed we didn’t get three points,” Shrewsbury manager Mickey Mellon said. "It comes down to who wants the game that particular day and who is going to rise to the occasion and who is going to do the extra yard and the little things to win. We started strong but our performance in the second half wasn't what it should have been."

Shrewsbury attacked fiercely early in the match and it was striker James Collins that pushed the first goal across in the 12th minute. In the 18th minute Scott Vernon made it 2-0 Shrewsbury. The Blues seemed to be firmly in control of the match, but York City struck back in the 28th minute. Ryan Jarvis squeezed a shot past a diving Jayson Leutwiler to pull the Minstermen within a goal. Ilesanmi's equalizer seemed to awaken the sluggish Shrewsbury squad but despite several opportunities they could not break the tie.
