Olympic shit and pissing show

I'll ask this question since you guys don't know a lot about curling. Would you rather listen to the players mic-ed up with no commentary or with the International feed commentator?

Personally, I prefer no commentator.

I like the commentator just cause I don't know strategy. Fatty seems better, HAARD GUYS GOTTA GO GOTTA GO

That's the split that I've noticed. My curling buddies hate the commentator. Those that don't know a lot about the sport like having him.

Fatty catches a huge break there.

Canada plays for the blank in the 9th and tries to take two in the 10th to claim the 7-6 win.

The international guy has a nice smooth voice that relaxes me. Was not a fan whoever did that one women's march that they actually won.

GJGE Fatty Shuster. Such an Murrican [sic] performance, hurr hurr hurr.

On the flip side, way to sober up, Bode. Miller and Andy Weibrecht make it to the podium. Men's Super G.

I really like the jerseys USA is wearing today. Much better than their other 2 versions.

Slovenia's blue and green combo is great, and more teams should use it.

Ryan Miller. You had one job. ONE JOB....GJGE!

EDIT: Well that was a nice exercise for the States. On to the business end of the show, Team America.

Stop Hachi. A win is a win. It's not like we could pass Sweden for seeding, and Canada will probably beat Finland in regulation.
So close doe. That shutout would have been awesome for Miller. He just needed to hang on for one half-minute.

Sweden, Canada, USA, Finland the top 4 teams? Who else will be moving on?

5 through 12 play each other on Tuesday. Here's how seeding is determined.

Following the completion of the preliminary round, all teams will be ranked 1D through 12D. To determine this ranking, the following criteria will be used in the order presented:[sup][3][/sup]
  1. higher position in the group
  2. higher number of points
  3. better goal difference
  4. higher number of goals scored for
  5. better 2013 IIHF World Ranking.
Right now, USA will be the 3 seed, but can move to 2 if Canada-Finland goes to OT, then USA goes ahead based on goal differential. Canada-Finland loser should still be the 4 seed based on goal differential. Canada-Finland winner gets the 1 seed if they win in regulation.

Looks like the qualifying matchups on Tuesday will be
5. Switzerland vs 12. Norway
6. Russia vs 11. Latvia
7. Czech Republic vs 10. Slovakia
8. Slovenia vs 9. Austria

So Norway is the 12, Slovakia 11, and Latvia 10? Switz will be higher seed than Russia?

Slovakia got a point today, so they move to 10. My previous post has all the seeding mapped out, but

1 through 4 is some combo of Sweden, Canada, Finland and USA. 5 through 12 are all set.

Also, I like the old system they used to have of 2 groups of 6, with the top 4 in each going to the medal tournament better then this 3 group stuff.

Fatty down 3-0 to Sweden after 4.

E. Brown loses to Jennifer Jones and Canada, 7-6, in the overnight draw.

E. Brown is in last place at 1-7.

Is someone complaining about a 5-1 win for our men's team? wat

Norway is definitely 12. They have 0 points and are -9 in differential. Latvia has 0 points as well, but is only -5. I do think he's right about Russia being 5 tho. Switzerland and Russia both are at 6 points (Finland and Canada as well) but Russia is +3 on goal diff, while Switz. is only +1. Canada(+8 GD), Finland (+9 GD) are both at 6 points as well, but I don't see either winning by 6 goals to make a difference.

If it is true that Russia is the 5 seed, then I want an outright winner today to be in the 3 spot and get the Switzerland-Latvia winner in the Quarters. We would then be on a collision course with Sweden.

Man are we awful at curling. I'd take goblue at this point.

I stayed up last night to watch the USA/Canada match and it was kind of startling to watch the reactions of the two skips after their shots. Every one the Canada guy threw was followed by this smug "yea i got diss" smug look and it nailed its target with little sweeping.

I'd happily make the trip to South Korea as an Olympian.

In regard to last night's game, Fatty's problem is he's a whiner. Something is always bothering him (the ice, the rocks, etc.). Last night, he started to throw his second under the bus for sweeping or not sweeping when told. Now, I've never been in an arena curling environment but I have participated in a tournament environment and it can be hard to hear. You need to have hand signals to communicate with the sweepers. Fatty's vice has no opinions on anything. Fatty tells him what to do and always calls his own sweeping. The vice has very little input. This is an uncommon setup. The vice should able to have input if only to provide a second opinion/option.

Looking at the bigger picture USA Curling's problem is two-fold:

1) We're not very good on the international stage. We were good 10 years ago but we're not good now. Which leads into:

2) Our curlers, in international competition, are amateurs curling in a more professionalized sport. When curling was added to the Olympics in 1998, almost every country was sending athletes who had full-time jobs and curled as more of "side job" because there wasn't any money in it. Even Canada had a Fatty as their skip. As sponsorship especially in Canada grew and countries wanted to win an Olympic medal, professionalism in the sport took hold. Now in 2012, curlers can curl full-time. They still have a full-time job but the elite curlers can make money off of curling.

Countries (except the US and Canada) now select which team is going to be their "elite" team and throw all their money behind them. This allows them to completely focus on curling and not curling and work during curling season. Canada has so many elite teams that the CCA can't throw their money behind just one team when Canada's #20 team can contend for a medal.

In the US, the money just isn't there from either the USCA or USOC to put everything one "elite" team. As a result, our "elite" curlers have to both work full-time and curl in tournaments to gain experience.

It will be interesting to see if the USCA/USOC finds the funding to go the "elite" team model. If they don't, we will probably see poorer and poorer performances in the Olympics...provided we qualify.

That's how the USAOC operates in general. I don't think that we federally or even by OC fund anyone, do we? That's why people have to go practice luging after work and shit and pay their own way to get to the Olympics. A lot of other countries bankroll the athletes who can't get by on sponsorships or professional sport jobs like hockey players and snowboarders.

goblue96

As for as I know, we don't federally fund any athletes (summer or winter games). The USOC is funded by sponsors and by people who check the donation box on their 1040 to donate $3 to the Olympic fund.

Yes, I think so. So we should hope Finland-Canada goes to OT.

No I don't think so. If Canada beats Finland in regulation the seeds would be..

1. Canada, 2. Sweden, 3. USA, 4. Finland, 5. Russia

A regulation loss by either team would put Canada/Finland and Russia on the other side of the bracket.
