I've played around enough with the Long Dark Alpha Sandbox Mode that I've decided to play "True Death" (ie when I die I'm done with the game for good) save on each of the two maps that are currently available. While the alpha version of the game is enjoyable, it currently has no story mode, so there isn't really a "point" to surviving other than to see how long you can last. Since I was starting to get a little bored of playing the sandbox mode, I figured this would be a nice sendoff for the game (at least until it is finished).

So there are currently two maps available for Sandbox Mode: Mystery Lake and Coastal Highway. I've played a fair number of saves (and died repeatedly at the fangs of wolves) on the Mystery Lake map, so I'm familiar with the game mechanics now and I know my way around the map pretty well. I have yet to play the Coastal Highway map at all, so when I play the "True Death" save on that map I will be going into an authentic "crash" survival situation where I have no clue about my surroundings. Should be fun.

I'll start with the "Mystery Lake" save first!

Mystery Lake True Death - Episode #1

When I started this save, I figured the computer would probably fuck me and I'd die instantly from a wolf attack or something... I did receive an unnecessarily harsh starting condition, which made for a really tense gameplay experience, but I did manage to live long enough to upload at least one video!

*For some reason my Shadowplay recording software wasn't working with this game, so I had to use Microsoft Encoder and the free version only allows you to record videos in 10 minute segments. As such, videos longer than 10 minutes shall be ham-fisted together as necessary.
**Sorry about the sound balance that makes the flare unnecessarily loud. I will try to correct for future videos.

Also just realized I've been recording at 15 FPS, so sorry it looks jumpy. I'm fixing it going forward, but you'll have to put up with it for a bit. I did fix the sound levels in vid 2. This software doesn't let you save defaults for some reason, so I keep having to adjust that shit each time.

Episode 2 - Wolves cock block me from my supply run. If you feel like skipping this one, I wouldn't blame you, because I pretty much spend the entire day hanging out waiting for wolves to leave. I talk a bit more about the game in general, so if you are interested in the game it might be worth the watch.

Episode 3 - This should be the last video recorded at 15 fps, so that's a positive. I also decided that it is time to take a risk and give the wolf guarding the lake entrance the slip... what will happen to our brave explorer?

Episode 5 - Less excitement than last episode, as I tried to manage my limited food by going to sleep hungry for several hours, then in the morning I did some relatively boring camp maintenance before heading off an a trek with the intention of finding some tools to make myself more self sustainable. I know my way around this map, which isn't entirely realistic, but I'm not going to pretend I don't have that benefit, so I set off for the trapper's cabin. As I mentioned before, once I finish the True Death play through on this map, I'll start a new one where I attempt the same thing on the 2nd map, which will be completely new to me.

Also, I'm posting these videos as I go, but I do acknowledge that this would be a most boring game for viewers to watch (lots of sleeping and such). I'll try to let you know when/where videos are exciting. When I eventually die at the end, I plan on making a highlight video or something like that where I skip through the boring parts. For this Episode, if watching me sleep and clean house doesn't interest you, you can skip to the last few minutes of Part 1, as that is where I finally venture out of the cabin to go on my next trek for supplies.

Episode 6 - Trappers Cabin! AHHHH son, in this episode I loot the trapper's cabin and find many great things including a single rifle bullet (which I vow to use on the lake wolf). From the art imitating life files, I set traps for fluff e bunnies. Very exciting episode, I predict you will all be on the edges of ur seats.

Travis, you said you tried Shadow Play, and it didn't work? That's a common problem with indie games.

They updated it to allow you to capture your entire desktop, including any open windows or games. You should definitely look into this, as I use this mode exclusively for video capture. It seems to have even less performance impacts as the normal mode.

Thanks for the tip, I really prefer to use Shadowplay, but I have several games (and general desktop recording) that it didn't play well with. Is desktop mode in setting or something? I'm not at the bar, but I'm also not at home with Shadowplay available in front of me.

Yeah, in GeForce Experience settings. You can set it to desktop mode or game mode. I really like Shadow Play because it allows you to set recording resolution, bit rate (quality) and even frame rate. And it compresses on the fly, in H.264. You can also use Shadow Play to live stream directly to Twitch.

All around, it's pretty superior to any other gaming recording software.

Oh yeah, I love using it, I just had the "not being able to record desktop" issue and it was pissing me off :laughing: I didn't realize they'd updated to include that.

Honestly it is the best free feature that came with my PC.

Thanks buddy, I should have told you that your previous instructions (check settings) worked perfectly. I recorded episodes 7 and 8 tonight. I'm wasted and have a hoarse voice during episode 8 (and now) so that should make for a fun listen!

Episode 7 - Setting up the trappers cabin as an alternate base camp, cooking some food and water, making more snares for rabbit trapping, learning more about the wood foraging dynamic, sleeping/starving the night away... then I go out and check my rabbit trap (success!) and set more rabbit traps. Then I find out this game assigns a pretty absurdly high caloric value on each rabbit! (like 500 calories each, I miscalculate in this video assuming both chunks of rabbit meat I harvested are the same size). Then I give you a talk about the efficiency of rabbit hunting for survival in reel life. Only 12 hours away from the 5 day achievement and I have enough food/water to make a base camp.

Episode 8 - Drunk Tavaris forgets to turn on his microphone so you there is no sound :(. In this video I hit the achievement for 5 day survival time and I continue my rabbit harvesting, wood foraging, and water boiling. Such wow. I'm pretty bummed this didn't record sound because I'm probably a lot more entertaining when I've had just a couple a drinks (@kella). I guess I'll have to let the liquor do the thinking again tonight, but remember to turn my mic on.

I hear you guy clamoring for more! Just finished recording 3 episodes for my greatest fan. These episodes have it all: @Reel shoutout, dogs barking at door to door solicitors, wolves, and ice fishing.

Episode 11: I sleep and then store some wolf meat and water for later and then I craft a 4th Snare for rabbit trapping. Then, I head outside for some wood gathering and ice fishing! My greatest success.
