Yeah, and I mean, we sucked ass and didn't really deserve to go. Italy was terrible against everybody with a pulse in qualifying. Chile is the only team I can think of that is truly good that missed out.

They would've flopped and ended up in 4th in their groups any ways as is tradition, but some of those African teams seemed to be victims of their groups. Ivory Coast is probably better than Tunisia, and I think Ghana and even Algeria have an argument as well. There may have been a couple other European teams that got tough groups like Wales or Bosnia?

That said there is still a lot of talent. Russia is one of the worst teams by ELO and they have the advantage of hosting (and just had a couple of good looking friendlies). There will be plenty of good teams to go around

African qualifying is really messed up. They really need to look at how CONCACAF or Asia does it. You get two big teams in a group together and there's no way they both can get out. A team has a bad run of 2-3 games, which happens often because Africa, and they're screwed. Egypt has been the best African team for a long team, but this is the first World Cup they've qualified for since 1990 because of Africa's insane system. 2002: same group as Senegal. 2006: same group as Ivory Coast and Cameroon. 2010: lost single tiebreaking game to Algeria. 2014: lost playoff to Ghana. That's like having the US and Costa Rica playing for one spot every cycle.

Pot 2: Spain, Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Croatia

Pot 3: Denmark, Iceland, Costa Rica, Sweden, Tunisia, Egypt, Senegal, Iran

Strangely enough Chile would have went through if they had not filed an appeal against Bolivia. Instead one of their biggest rivals, Peru did.

Just did a simulated draw:

One group I got was Brazil, Spain, Iran and Nigeria. Each team arguably the best team in its confederation. Also got Germany, England, Costa Rica and South Korea.

When is the actual draw?

There's not going to be many interesting groups this time around. I'm finding it hard to find many teams in pot 3 or 4 that I would expect to make it out of the group phase. Maybe Sweden, Denmark, or Iceland? Pot 4 is hot garbage.

Most of Pot 4 could have a chance, depending on the draw of course. Those teams have some talent (aside from the Saudis, lol). I get the feeling that Iceland are going to disappoint and people will forget how crazy it is for a country of that size to even be there.

Nah, try putting together a draw where you really think one of the pot 4 teams would advance. Even with Poland or Russia from pot 1, I don't think there's any pot 4 team that would advance. I got a draw with Russia, Peru, Iran, Nigeria, which is probably the closest you'd get, but I'd sill expect Russia and Peru to get out of that group.

Belgium, Portugal, Peru, and Russia are capable of laying eggs and going out. Get drawn with them and you have a chance.

Serbia, Nigeria and Morocco could advance out of Pot 4. Iran is my darkhorse. The rest of the Asian teams are mediocre (Japan) or awful (the other 3 teams).

Yeah, if they the pots the old way, you could have gotten Germany, Spain, Uruguay and Mexico in a group. That’s not possible this time around.

Group B is the toughest followed by Group D. Group A and H are atrocious. Has there been an opening game as uninteresting as Russia v Saudi Arabia?

Group D is tough as well. Croatia-Iceland split wins against eachother in qualifying so that will be an interesting match up.

Group B and Group D look the toughest to me. Wouldn't be surprised if Portugal don't get out of that group. Group A is awful. Ugh. Probably won't watch any of those games.
